Zamioculcas (ZZ) came home with me. Repotting question.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello all,

The addiction got to me, I had to run back to the store for a
Zamioculcas before they were sold out.

Several hard smacks to the existing pot didn't do much except
release a bit of my own frustration, I ended up having to cut the
pot off with snippers.

Once the pot was removed, this is what made it so hard to do so:

Could someone please tell me, in repotting, should the bulbous
growth be exposed, or will it affect the plant if they are under the
soil?

Having never grown one of these before, I prefer not to kill it. LOL

Many thanks,
KM

Man, that thing was rootbound, wasn't it? Looks like some of mine when I wait too long to repot. By the time I do get them out of their too small home it looks as though they are strangling themselves with their own roots!

I would just dig my fingers in there and loosen up those roots and re-pot in the correct size pot with some good fresh well draining soil. I often use the hose with a very hard spray into the roots to loosen up the tight ones.

Hope you will post a pic after she/he's all potted up!

Ah, Lin, that is what I thought about doing, glad you mentioned the
power shower.

Be back soon with a pic of the new baby with his or her new pot.

The ZZ plant I bought last week doesn't even show any bulbous part above the soil. I didn't even know they came from bulbs like that!! So, I don't know what to tell you there. I have always heard when transplanting something to plant at the same level it was in the pot?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

All of the plants were just screaming for help, not just the ZZ's, but
all of them. The ZZ had even developed fingers which I assume are
the plants way of reaching out for soil elsewhere. I had to tuck several
of these fingers in, they seemed very desperate to reach out for another
home. LOL

Come, on, camera. It takes a while to enumerate them all when there
are so many. Guess I need to clean out the camera, too!

Ah, here we go.

Don't look, I didn't close the bottom file cabinet
drawer all the way.

Okay, now looking at this plant, tell me how bad I am for
thinking of cutting off the two long arms. My train of thought
was that it would even it out and give me two branches to try
propagating by way of leaf.

Place your vote now. :-)

Oh yeah ... those long branches are just screaming "Cut Me", "Propagate Me" .... "Make New Plants With Me"!!!

I sure would prune it, dunk those branches into some rooting hormone and stick them in a pot of soil all their own. As long as those branches are, I think I would get 2 cuts from each ... have four to root!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, Lin, thanks! I was afraid I would be chastised for the thought
of severing the branches.

Whooo hooooo!

Come here, little ZZ, I have plans for you!

LOL Wuvie! Got your white coat, gloves, mask and scalpel?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Got a baseball jersey, yellow Playtex dishwashing gloves,
a glass of apple juice and a pair of garden shears.

Think that'll work? LOL

(Zone 1)

LOL ... Sure!

The bulbous parts should be just under your 'soil line'...be sure you use a really fast draining mix so that your watering endeavors don't rot those bulbous parts.(Ü)

Personally, I would not cut the longer stems....it took some time for them to get that way, and others might soon catch up to them.

Satsuma, AL(Zone 8b)

It took a while (about 3 months) for mine to start sending up new stems; one of them ended up to be about 20" long (I'm proud of it!).

That said, I don't think I'd ever cut off a stem...

Part of my problem is that we are approaching winter
weather, so everything is indoors. The only space left
for the ZZ doesn't leave much room for the two long arms,
so if I cut them off, the plant will be uniform and tidy, not
to mention it will fit on the shelf.

:-) If it behaves until next spring, it might get a better
spot. In this house you have to earn your keep. LOL

Satsuma, AL(Zone 8b)

*sigh*, do what you must. :)

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, it's that 'space-issue'....I can definitely relate! (Ü)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Speckled, I'll do it in a sanitary, safe, humane manner.

:-)
