Tiny little things taking over the Lotus bucket?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Last summer we bought a Lotus from a fabulous lady
at Tranquility Gardens. At the time we noticed this little
green stuff floating in the plant pots, and thought nothing
of it.

While it does not appear to be harming the Lotus at
all, I just wondered if anyone could tell me what it might be?

Many thanks,
KM

duckweed

Thanks a mill! Off to research, thanks!

Its wonderful : fish love it, its pretty, it reproduces fast

Its awful: its like "pond" kudzu and if the fish dont eat all of it.. and you decide you dont want it covering the whole surface of the pond...it is a major problem to get rid of. Clogs skimmers too... Nice in a container but not the pond for me :)

Azolla is a little bigger than duck weed and slower growing...

You know, it is so pretty, so bright! Sadly, we don't have
ducks anymore, but I could certainly see them gobbling
this stuff up.

I bought some duckweed to see if I could manage keeping it under control, but I never got the chance. The fish ate every last morsel and I haven't tried it again. It did look pretty clinging to the plant pots in the pond for about one whole day;) Your pic makes me want to try some again.

Yep my fish will eat any that get in their water, I have side pockets that will just get mucked up with it though.

I think I might try some again next summer. I have unused Lotus Tubs and I could let it grow in there and feed it to the fish by the handful.

Azreno, excuse my ignorance, but what are side pockets?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Would that have to do with a filter or a pump, maybe?

:-) Perhaps this stuff clogs it up?

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

maybe that is it wuvie. somehow, the idea of some kind of pockets alongside the pond sounded nice;))

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

They are separate lined pockets that have plumbing into them then water runs over the edge into the pond. For now they've been a handy place to put small lilies and small plants, but longterm they are to be veggie filters.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ah. Your pond is no doubt beautiful.

:-)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Not really, it's very unfinished lol

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

I love the sound of those pockets.I bet I would think they are beautiful by the pond. Personal choice for me is a somewhat wild, unfinished look:))

The pockets are really very utilitarian, a way to get plants out of the pond itself. As far as finishing goes, we plan to faux rock all the edges as well as water features. I got started on it this past spring but summer put that to a stop and it is about to get started back up again now that it's cooler. This pic is the one area that's done, it's an edge that has steps touching it on the side.

That is going to be impressive when it's done. The color of your faux and shaping is perfect.

Thanks! It gets hard after awhile to work up the umph to work on it but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Azreno's pond IS beautiful, I've been lucky enough to see it in person. She just keeps making it more and more beautiful! Show them some pics of your fish, Lynn! (They're HUGE!)

LOL It's big but the beauty is really still to come. I can't seem to get good pics of the fish :( Maybe next year after I scale down my fish count palnts and the pond stays clean! Brenda, I bet yours are getting big!

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Our biggest ones are probably about 12 inches. Still have a mix of other sizes, though.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yeah, they grow at different rates, next year you'll have woppers in there lol
