I would like to plant some clematis. I have some now but the red flowers are small and don't show so well. I'm looking for something with large flowers that will produce lot's of flowers. I'd prefer red or white blooms, purple would be ok too.
Which has the biggest blooms?
Lauri..Hi from a fellow Texan..what zone is Frisco in?..I know you want larger flowers and that will be the pruning group 2 varieties..but you must remember they take a good three years to get established to give you the amount of blooms you are wanting for they bloom on old wood....they have a flush of blooms in spring and then again late summer/fall...so don't expect too much the first few years from them..pruning group 3's do so well and are easier to grow and more vigorous...these bloom on the new vines produced in a growing season and must be hard pruned around mid February here in Texas... but are smaller flowers but make up for that in the tons of blooms they produce .
Clematis "Ramona" is a wonderful pruning group 2 that is a light lavendar blue that blooms on old and new ...Mine bloomed off and on all season...Clematis "Henryi" is a white that blooms in Spring and again later on..
Clematis "Niobe" has been a great red for me..blooming off and on all season..
When you said small blooms were you referring to something like "Texensis"?..bell shaped?..I think you would love the pruning group 3's/viticellas for they do so well here ..if so I can recommend some great reds/whites and purples...Jeanne

Hi Jeanne... Frisco is on the border of zones 7b and 8. I'm not sure which clematis I have as the tag on the plant showed a Jack Manni,(spelling?) and I turned up with very small red blooms. I'm glad to know that it takes a few years to get the blooms to produce abundantly. I don't mind small flowers when there are lots of them! The fence that I am trying to cover is a good distance from my porch, I just want to be able to appreciate them from the distance. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks
Lauri..A great place for looking at Clematis is COTW aka Clematis on the Web..we lovingly refer to that place as our Clematis Bible..

Clematis "Jackmanii" is a pruning group 3
You might want to consider Clematis "John Huxtable","Huldine","Candida" for a white
Clematis "Mme. Julia Correvon","Barbara Harrington" for reds and tons of ones for Purples..you are more than welcome to look at my Gardening Journal to see the ones I have
