Datura turned out to be a brug

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi everyone. I'm a newbie to brugs....inadvertently. I bought a "yellow datura" for $3 at a moving sale and posted my question on the datura forum. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/datura/all/ As it turns out, it's a brug! Based on a few people's suggestions, I had two choices. One, cut both tops off since it is not going to flower by winter, root, and by spring, I will have 3 brugs. Two, leave it as is because it MIGHT flower, but repot and fertilize with 20-20-20.

This is what I have in mind. Cut the taller spindly branch on top to root, and leave the rest of the plant as is and continue to repot and fertilize and see what will happen by winter time. I'm not totally convinced of my decision.....what do you think? Any advice will be appreciated. I know it's only a $3 plant, but now that I know it's a brug, I'd like to keep it for a while. I see all your beautiful blooms and would really like to give it a try. Thanks.

You could cut the bottom one to root and allow the taller one to grow as a standard. If you do, when you repot it use wooden, bamboo or plastic coated metal stakes to support that spindly stem. I buy my metal stakes from Home Depot. Your plant will not bloom until it has formed a "Y". If you decide to cut both stems, what is left will have to start from scratch will definitely not bloom before winter, but you will have a bushier plant. I'd go with one extra plant and a standard.

It looks so spindly and unstable I would cut both off and root. The main plant would then bush out and "Y" in several places, meaning lots of flowers in the Spring :)

I vote cut em both off.. It's not strong enough to support a canopy, much less the heavy blooms. If you let it start over with plenty of fertilizer, it will come back much stronger. JMHO

well I would plant it in the yard and cut it completely down in the fall and mulch the entire thing and it will come back in the spring but I think that you are in an area where you can just let it grow, but to spindly to do that.

Thank you for your responses. I'm just going to have to get over it.....and cut both off.
