Grit...

Lapeer, MI

I have this one chicken that I keep confined in this cage in older chickens pen, because of it disability. The cage bottom has a wire fence so I put some cardboard to cover it. Now, I heard the chickens need to have grit/s to act like teeth for them. And, well this one doesn't have any grit/s anywhere near.

Do I have to give it something in place of grits??? If so, what kind???

Thanks, Eric

You can buy grit at any pet shop or feed store. To be honest I think they only need grit if they eat anything other than a prepared poultry crumble.... such as seeds, grains, greens etc,,, stuff that needs to be ground up in the crop to digest properly.

you can use course sand
just salt the food with it
Its what they'd ingest if there were free ranging
