brain eating pond amoebas

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Have you guys heard about this? I know it sounds a little sci/fi. I'm a paranoid person, and am a little afraid since I was cleaning out sludge by hand last weekend. Nothing went up my nose, but I have had stomach problems since then...

I heard about this yesterday and it weirded me out too! It mostly scares me because when I visit home (Houston) I love to go water skiing. I can deal with snakes....but brain eating amoebas! That's just not fair.

Let's hope your tummy ache is just psychosomatic.

ag, the article stressed standing water several times. Is this a fish pond with a pump? That would make a difference. Also, remarks that the water has to go way up in the sinus such as from diving. I would expect you won't be exposed. Not the first time I have heard of it. Usually around the edges of lakes with slews that go inland and the water doesn't circulate. People wading in those areas get in trouble. Also temps in the 3 didgets.

Yeah the pond is circulating. Unfortunately it's not psychosomatic, I've had a lingering stomach bug for the last week. But I don't have a fever and haven't had a headache till today, so no signs;) I tend to over-react with health stuff. My Mother hates that I get in the pond to clean the scum once a year and thought it would be good to tell me about this (haha).

Hi! I was lurking here and have something to add.....i hope you don't mind.

When I was growing up in South Texas my family had a cabin on Delta lake.
We all horsed around in that Lake for years. Boating, skiing, underwater swimming etc.
About the time I was 16 ( many many years ago ,lol)
a young girl who was swimming in that lake came down with the sickness from this same type of amoeba. Unfortunately she died, but no one else got it and we continued to go there without problems.
I remember at at the time the news media reported that it was rare for someone to actually "catch" this thing to that degree. I hadn't heard about it again until recently.
As long as you take resonable precautions I think your chances of getting killed by a polar bear are probably better...lol!

I'm sorry you are feeling bad! I didn't mean to imply it was all in your head...I was just meaning I hope you don't have that amoeba!!! We have a stomach thing going around up here (I'm an elementary art teacher, so I see it if it's going around...and usually get it). I hope you have the chance to rest and get rid of it.

Lol I went to Texas Tech, so I'm not going there with the Aggie mystic. We have our own stygmas to deal with. :)

Since I last was here have heard of 4 other people with stomach virus. Not related...didn't eat the same thing. As you say must be making its way around.

No intent to put the aggies down.....my husband tried it for awhile and a lot of our best friends are aggies.....and I have relatives that are tea-sippers....now.that makes it even....I'm in trouble with everybody.
