I know I should know who this is, I've seen him before on this forum but now when I want to id him, I can't find anything about him! And this isn't a good picture. Can anyone tell me who he is? He's got a big hooded head with two eyespecks, and at times you can see a little pink mouth underneath. Looks like he's made some silk in the leaf, I don't know if that's where he's going to stay. There was another one on another leaf but he climbed down the tree. There aren't many leaves left on this little tree, most of them have turned brown and fallen off.
Who is this cute cat?
thea, it looks like a Spicebush ST, what tree is it on?
The Spicebush STs will live in little folded leaf shelters.
Whatever it is, you are so lucky to find him! I love those eyespots, they're so scary lol
To me, it looks more like a TST (Tiger Swallowtail)...looks similar to the ones I raised. If it is, you are very lucky!
Oh Linda I bet that is it, that leaf sort of looks like a Tulip tree, doesn't it...or a poplar?
Thanks miz flygirl and miz Linda. Well, I think it is a tuliptree, and I think you're right, it is probably the tiger swallowtail. I have seen them around a bit, but not as much as the Black Swallowtails. But looking at my bf book, I see that there is a dark female version of the tiger swallowtail that I could easily have been mistaking for a BST, so maybe I had more of the TST's than I had thought!!
This poor little guy: I got real worried last night because I went out in the dark to see if he was still there in his leaf and he wasn't! This sad little tree only has a couple of leaves on it still, so it's easy to look for him! He was no where to be seen, so I felt very bad that maybe I had disturbed him trying to take photos. But then this morning, he was back on that same leaf. This afternoon: gone again. I can't bring him in because I don't have food for him, unless I can find another tuliptree.
I'm finding not only do I need to learn more about the bf species around here, but I need to get to know my trees and plants too!!
Thea, he may like some other things, like: Lilac, Willow, Birch, Ash, Chokeberry, Peach, Plum, Apple, Catalpa, Hornbeam, Cottonwood, Mock Orange, Sassafras, and Cherry...do you have any of those? Or maybe a neighbor has one of those. It looks like there are a lot of hosts that they'll eat.
When I was raising my Luna cat, my Sweetgums had been limbed up and when I couldn't reach anymore I went over to the neighborhood park and cut some branches off for him. I got lucky, there are Sweetgums all over down here.
I hope you find something, he sure is cute.
I'm going to look around!! We have a great neighbor who is a retired forester, maybe he can help me locate some of these trees, if he doesn't have them himself. Thanks Fly!!
Go for it Thea.....you'll find something!
I love this little guy! He's SO cute!!!
