Took these earlier in the summer and finally managed to get them on the computer. This is Syzygium malaccense, the malay apple. Flowers are plentiful and a wonderful color. Fruit is also very decorative, bright shiny red when ripe. Also very good. I purchased this tree last fall and was thrilled when I got fruit the first summer. Growth is fast in the warm months.
Blooms from a few of my favorite trees.
I love this group of trees.(family Fabaceae subfamily Caesalpinioideae tribe Detarieae) Included in the tribe are the 'hankerchief' trees--Brownea, Saraca, Maniltoa and Amherstia are some examples, all are relativley to exceedingly rare. Their young, limp 'hankderchief' leaves are amazing. As you can see from the photo, the flowers are great too. A very low branching tree, as can be seen in the photo.
Wow, very pretty.
Popper, thnks for the beautiful pics. The first one is of special interest to me.
We have a family friend who loves fruiting trees and shrubs. We give him something every year for his BD and Christmas. By now he has all the usuals and a couple bordering on unusual...LOL!
It's getting harder for me to find new stuff he would like.
Would you share where you got it with me?
That is actually a relatively difficult tree to find up here, I got a from a friend & it was the only one he had. There are some nurseries down in south Florida that have them. Use Daves Garden Watchdog and search FL for tropical fruits and you will find a few down there that will have them. They do not like frost!. Jene's Tropicals in St Pete might have them. I checked there once before I got this one and they didnt have them, but you never know.
About a year ago I obtained some seeds from Malaysia of a white form of S malaccense that has white fruit & flowers and gets round white fruit about the size of a softball (normal malay apples are a few inches long and pear shaped). All the seeds grew and the largest is about 2 feet. I'm excited about those!
Wow thats great!
Thanks for the tips on where to look for the Syzygium too.
You have alot of interesting plants, popper. That apple must be gorgeous in bloom. : )

It is an interesting tree in bloom, The flowers come in clusters right off the trunk and larger branches. The color is so bright and the flowers are interesting, basically big balls of stamens. The ground underneath the tree is covered with pink stamens as the flowers age and fall apart. The rose apple, Syzygium jambos is similar, flowers white instead of pink. Both put out surprising large numbers of flowers.
wow those are beautiful
That is one groovy tree!
Wow, I am stunned! Absolutely GORGEOUS! Thank you for sharing the pics.

Thanks! I used to see these trees in Hawaii & am thrilled that I have been able to get them & have them do so well here in Florida
Well, if it produces any seeds toss some this way, I bet it will grow here.! That is very hot pink! I wonder how it would look next to a powderpuff tree!
That's what it reminded me of too. It's stunning!
That is really pretty. : )
