Pendesenca partridges

Woodsville, NH

Hi
I saw a pair of these up for sale. They are supposed to lay dark brown eggs. I am at a total loss on them, never heard of them before the only thing that came up when I googled was full size chicken, but thats it..........Are they Partridges or chickens?????????
. Anyone have any input?

On feathersite Partridge Penedesenca refers to color of the Penedesenca chicken/rooster.

Beyond that I know nothing.......lol

LoraK, The breed Penedesenca was close to extinct 5 years ago. Some Spanish Professor in or near Barcelona rounded up the remains and got the birds to lay the eggs they had been reputed. They were selling for high dollars but the dark brown eggs and different color varieties have pretty much gotten mainstreamed. There were several individuals in the US trying desperately to become the backyard Penedesenca gurus. The breed is just a semi-rare chicken breed. Partridge is one of the prettier colors available ... I prefer the Crele color variety most .... but that is my preference. There was quite a bit of fervor surrounding this breed .... similar to what was/has been going on with the Marans and the several color varieties. The birds are wanted because they lay DARK BROWN eggs. That sums it up. You can get birds that are reputed to lay dark brown eggs. Marans, Barnevelder, Penedesanca & Welsumers. Welsumers are the most reliable of the 4 and lay a significantly larger egg on the average...... the Welsumer breed comes in 1 color variety and that is likely a big reason why they are the most reliable dark brown egg laying breed. Those who insist on adding new colors to known breeds do so by breeding outside of the breed to get the color (cross breeding) and as a result they loose the very thing that has made these 4 breeds famous in the first place ..... the DARK BROWN egg color. One interesting point about the Penedesenca breed is they are unique in having white lobes on their head and yet not lay a white egg. That specific trait is found in breeds that trace their origins from the Iberian Peninsula .... there are many. From what I recall they are the only breed to lay a brown egg with the white lobe. I've had Minorcas in Black and Buff . They are really nice chickens. I've had Anconas and Buttercups and they are a thrill. The Buttercup hen I had was the friendliest bird I've ever owned. She'd run up to me and fly up onto my shoulder. The breed is small ... almost bantam sized.

i googled the pendesenca and came up with this thread! bumping it up for interest. the feathersite link has beautiful photos!

TF, that is so funny, I just did the same thing. :o)

Well, at least we now know Dave's is getting the recognition it deserves.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

over the winter i was seasrching for replacement Buckeyes, & kept showing up here, to my own posts LOL

but now, i think i want some of THESE birds...

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

TF, maybe we need to use a new search engine? I am going to try MSN and see what comes up there.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

TF, I just looked on internet explorer, and found a lot of sites for the Pendesenca chickens including "feathersite". There are pictures there, too.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yeah, went to the feathersite already, see Julie's post above LOL

i need a place that sells the eggs or day olds... got hatching fever here

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Good luck for that.

That's the reason I am not looking.

psst...(DH is starting to talke about enlarging the henhouse.) I am not saying anything. We have a problem with feather loss and I am thinking it is because the house is too small for the amount of hens we have. I was going to cull them, but since we are picking up more customers for eggs, it would be better to enlarge it than to get rid of them.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, then ENLARGE. gotta do what DH says....

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Yep, I thought so too.

And, of course we do what DH's say. LOL At least some of the time.

Does anyone know what the Penedesenca's temperament is like? If I had all the room in the world I would probably try some of the game breeds--just for the look, and maybe a lightweight Mediterranean breed. Right now I need quiet, friendly birds. The Penedesenca is very striking looking, it looks harder feathered than most brown egglayers. One book says the eggs are nearly black the first year. Wow!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

if i knew of a place, i would have some too!

Lodi, United States

Apparently Pendesenca have the typical "flighty mediterranean temperament" so they won't work for me, but someone at BackYardChicken says they will have a limited number of hatching egg, chicks and maybe started pairs this spring. I wish I could try them--the eggs are really dark.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

hmmm, i love my brown leghorns, they have a similar temperament. we spend a LOT of time handling them, some settled down, others didn't, but all can be handled.

is BYC a forum or a hatchery? who was it?

Lodi, United States

TamaraFaye--I think BYC is a website for urban chicken keepers. If you Google "pendesenca chicken temperament" the second entry is the one with the woman(?) offering Pendesenca eggs. She first describes her experience with the breed. Then at the bottom she talks about her plans for the year including egg offers. The url for BackYardChickens is: http://backyardchickens.com/. But I wouldn't know how to find the thread offering Pendesenca's there. So the best way is to follow the Google topic. Let us know what you learn.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

thanks! i will!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

so far google took me somewhere else. to someone who may need to find a home for her Pendesenca roo. btw, google thinks it is spelled penedesenca???

Lodi, United States

Yes, it should be spelled "Penedesenca". My bad. Try the correct spelling and go to the second entry.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

did that too, found an artist blog where she bought a trio. contacting her to find out where. she mentioned his crow was "deep and bellowing, like a moose"! and he was HUGE

Lodi, United States

Huge, bellowing, moose-like chicken? Wow!

I think this may be the best way to go to the one I found (I'm not very computer savy): http://backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=848

Okay, I checked and this take you to the right posting. The information about the eggs is at the bottom:-)
The "mothermastiff" site mentioned in the thread also seems to be someone who is (or was) selling Penedesanca.

after emailing her, i read further down where she had to take her roos to a farm, as they were getting to crow so often...

will check out that link, thanks!

heck, what's one more heritage breed? ;-)

tf

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

tha info was great. now i will have to google to see if i can find out who she is LOL, she doesn't have any personal info or links on her page, though she requested mor einfo and offered to ship fertile eggs.

personally, i would want the black ones, they are larger, dual purpose...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

pheww!

i had to register and login just to contact this person. here is the page where there are mor epictures of the birds. he/she apparently joined BYC to post these for sale, then diecded to keep them. i inquired about eggs...

i found some eggs on eggbid! somebody come sit on me before i have to buy more incubators!!!

Lodi, United States

Congratulations! Do it! Do it! (Bad Peer Pressure). I keep assuring DH that chicks are very frail and will certainly not survive and that my chances of hatching anything at all is almost nil--meanwhile I am working like a maniac (Maineiac?) to make sure everything will hatch and/or survive ;-)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, was gonna do it this morning, and the auction got exteneded ! i may email the seller later, right now i have eggs waiting at the PO, they actually called, and i have eggs packed up to send.

$35 for a dozen. gee, anybody want to split a six pack with me? LOL

i do have room left in my bator though. it's between these and BLR Wyandottes with Mille Fleur D'Uccles. I gotta start getting birds i can spell and pronounce. More Leghorns???

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

I just bid on those Pene. eggs that Ray has on eggbid - The Wheatons are my fav, the hens are almost buff. Creles and partridge are very colorful also. I asked him if he would send everything but the black ones, he said yes! I have this thing about black birds - too many Hitchcock movies I guess...Scott

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i am going to wait. is Ray TXcowgirl??? she had lots of breeding birds, but no website for me to look at. i would prefer creles or partridge. my brown leghorns are partridge...

hitchcock, oh, yes. but our JGs and BAs are so big and friendly we won't get them mixed up. don't pass that fear onto your kids LOL.

so, i can get some penedesenca eggs from you next year, yes?

tf

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

TF, I would hope to have eggs by then. Ray is Ray 32690 on eggbid. Ray runs his auction for the pens. frequently, and he will sell you whatever you want for eggs if you ask. My bet is you could get a dz. mix of crele and partridge. Do you like the brown leghorns? Do the lay tons like the whites do?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

maineiac, how did these come out? i have been wanting some so bad, either these or wellsummers....

not that i NEED more chickens, but... would have done better getting those Penedesenca eggs thatn those BLR Wyandottes that got damamged in shipping...

tf

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

why didn't the chicken fairy send me penedesencas? i have a baby with eight teeth and cutting more, doesn't THAT count?

Lodi, United States

TF, did you ask yourself? I am sure the Chicken Fairy (aka tf) will grant your wish. She is putty in your hands!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

she is a cunning black mailer, watch your self! edit your post so you dont' reveal her idientiy, you never know who is lurking in these threads LOL

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

found it!

now to find the breeder link... and convicne the chicken fairy
tf

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

OK, mainiac, how did yours turn out? i decided i want some wheaton ones...
