I received some new terrarium plants and opened them up immediately. They were very well packed. They seemed a little droopy and I thought it might be due to the postal ride, so I gave them a day and then put them in their new home. The soil they were in was a little damp and the instructions said to plant them in damp soil. The soil I put them in was a little damp because I was worried they were still droopy. I put them in the terrarium yesterday afternoon and this morning they are still droopy. Should I be concerned or be patient? My dad is not doing well and I planned to bring the terrarium as a gift to him tomorrow. He's much better with plants, but I would hate to kill the plants before I give them to him. :(
Thanks,
Megin
My new terrarium plants are droopy :(
Hi Megin: Welcome! I am thinking your plants are just in a bit of shock right now from being trasnported and then transplanted. They should perk up in a day or two after getting adjusted to their new environment. I hope you don't have the soil too wet. Does your terrarium have a lid on it, and what about a light? I have a bunch of glass apothecary jars planted up and they all have lids on them. I also have some glass containers planted that just have saran wrap over the top. I don't water very often at all .... every few weeks. The moisture builds up naturally when the plastic wrap is on or the lids are on. I also have a 10 gal Aquarium that I planted as a terrarium. This one has a lid with a light built in. The light stays on about 12 hours a day! As I said, I don't water very often at all. Just every once in awhile in the 10 gal tank I have to sprinkle a little water if it looks like the soil is drying out. For the most part terrariums are very easy to care for. If plants get too tall, I just pinch them back or take them out and stick something else in there!
What a great gift for your Dad, especially if he enjoys plants!
If your plants haven't perked up by tomorrow or Tuesday I would check to see if perhaps the soil is too wet. Plants sitting with a lot of water around the roots will rot. Good luck and keep us posted on how your Dad's new terrarium garden is doing!
Looks like two are going to make it, but I may have to replace one. My dad was so happy and thought the soil wasn't too wet. It's an open container. The instructions read if there was a lid to keep it a little off the top. I may have done the wrong thing by keeping them out overnight. I must have misunderstood. Learning.
If it looks like they are cheering up I'll take a pic soon.
Thanks for your tips and info,
Megin
Megin: I'm glad your Dad liked his Terrarium gift. What were the plants that you used for it? I hope everything does well and thrives for him. Yes, please take a picture to post when you get a chance!
Happy Growing!
