Should I deadhead gingers?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

wondering if cutting the spent blooms off will promote more blooms, as with other plants. thanks for your help

Interesting question. I never deadhead the hedychiums. Neither do I cut them back during dormancy. In spring, it is so easy to pull out the dried stalks. As for hidden ginger or curcumas, I pull them out once they're midway blooming. This does encourage more blooms though. Hope this helps.

I cut all my gingers that has died back to the ground when they turned yellow and brown..I can't stand dried up dead looking dormant plants anywhere here..LOL....I do cut off spent blooms from the tips of my hedychiums tho...been doing that for years..not sure if it promotes more growths tho...

Moodene, I used to do that too. Cut them down and heavily mulched for winter. Then one year, I had a bypass and was forced to leave all gingers (alpinias, curcumas and hedychiums) unprotected from NC winter. Fortunately the dense foliage became a natural blanket over the rhizomes. PTL, they all emerged the following year. If they were to die, I know I will return back to Louisiana and dig up more from my ex's yard!!!!
I agree, brown dried up foliage can mar the beauty of any garden.

Nery, your hedys won't rebloom. They send out that one bract and that's it for the year, that's the beauty of having many canes though. My 'Tangerine' hedy tends to want to spread out it's blooming from mid summer to fall.
