Golden Lady

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

No blooms last year and now finally I get to see her again.
Last year was a no go here with the bugs and heat.
This year I thought it was a wash out due to the rains.
Species died all the way back. But she will survive.
Looks like all but, will bloom this fall.
I guess I will change my mind and keep a few. LOL

I'm glad she's blooming for you this year. :)

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Have had mine for 4 yrs. Two in pots, didn't bloom this year. Drought.

Love that brug!

Gee thanks everyone. I tried something different this year because of the last few years of poor performance. So far it is working great. Not much for looks but it is working.
Self watering pots made from Walmart muck buckets.

Wow! Gorgeous! Aren't you glad you were persistant? She is just as lovely as can be! I like the coleus, too! And you are quite inventive there on the self-watering pot! So the muck bucket part.... is that a 25 gal cord-handled plastic tub? Did you put holes in the bottom of the blue tub? I'm curious about this, sorry for all the questions.

No the blue tub forms the water reservoir . You put a hole just below the red floor to let the water out. I did not do that on one and I almost drowned the Brug. The pond basket fills with soil and it becomes the wick into the water reservoir.

Here is photo showing overflow hole.

Photo take just now shows the difference between the regular pot on left and the self watering one.

Okay, I get it now. I was wondering how you keep it from "sitting" in water, it's the hole just below the red "floor". And the floor is cut so it holds the weight and doesn't smash the pond basket? How often did you fill it with water? I've seen the self-watering pots, but never big enough for brugs and even the small ones are over-priced, I think. That's brilliant! Thanks for sharing, I might have to try that next year.

You used a piece of down spout for the watering tube... pvc would probably work, too.... (already conjuring up my plan of duplicaton)

Walmart only sells blue buckets. If you want black I found this site where you can get the good black ones. http://www.horse.com/products/gift-0__sku-BSE43.html
Buy the blue ones for the floor and order the black ones. What I am going to do for next year. If it was not for my clay soil I would bury them part way.

17 1/2 gallons, I thought they were 25 gallon. I'm going to measure mine. I bought some at Dollar General. I also bought Fusion spray paint for plastic, cause I didn't like the red one clashing with my Pink Beauty. I have clay and rock here, so I pretty much have to use a stick of dynamite to make a new bed. I might construct some raised beds...I joke that I'm going to get a mini excavator (they're so cute), but I doubt it would even break the surface.
