What is that brug called something like iochroma with the clusters of little (2-3 inches long) of blue blooms? Does anyone have any experience with it?
brug with small blue blooms
Here's a pretty good link about Iochromas. They are pretty cute. :) http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/762576/
after reading that link, I'm glad I didn't win the one I was bidding on eBay as they seem to be hard to get to bloom. Thanks for the link.
Don't be too hasty woodspirit! I've been growing Iochroma for about three years now and they can't be stopped!
They grow so quickly here that I have to prune twice each year. There are many kinds of Iochs, so you have a pretty good selection to choose from. They aren't as rare as they used to be, and more gardeners are gaining experience growing them.
When they come up for sale on eBay, go for it! Just make sure the plant is at least 12" tall. Then, you'll have a good head start.
Good luck!
They may take a while to get to bloom, but once they start, they just get more and more and more! I got some cuttings last year and never put them in the ground... this year, I put one in the ground and it took off. It took a long time to bloom, and I started to get frustrated, but then all of a sudden WHAM... it's loaded and the hummers LOVE IT!
I would recommend this plant to any brug lover! I want more of them.. the only thing I don't like about it is it gets "floppy" and needs pruning to remain compact. Small price to pay for such a darling bloom and food for the hummers!
I will go take a pic...
Wow! Gordo you have a wonderfull collection of these beautiful plants! Do they start easily from cuttings like brugs?
Sharon
Hi Daisy12!
I do start them from cuttings, but they can be a bit touchy.
Believe it or not, they are best started in April or May here in Florida.
Small, flexible tip cuttings are the ideal, and no more than three inches tall. Mist and use a good rooting medium.
Not too wet.
They get mad when they're wet, and die.
They do sound more difficult that the brugs. I just started with brugs this year and have rooted cuttings and started seeds----really fun to see how fast the grow! Now my quandry is how to maintain these seedlings and young cuttings over the winter.

I think will try to have some of these plants next year if i can find them. This is my first year with brugmansia, so this is sort of exciting to see the relatives of them. Never knew they existed until know or I probably would have looked for them this year! are they good container plants? I live in zone 5-6 so i would have to overwinter them inside. I have really enjoyed looking at the pictures, what a neat plant!
Gordo, any chance I can get some cuttings of the Royal Blue? I have a small greenhouse and could baby them.
Wonderful Liz..
and so many happy ones... now ..does Sky King have a white edgeing to the skirt of the flowers... if so... that's mine... I was wondering which it was .. a great grower for me... grown to a 3' - 4 ' shrub in a season.. with flowers alll over it... all of the time.. a real trooper in every way for me.. what do you think... here's my Sky King...
