Hilary,

Great hoverfly pictures, but they cannot possibly be Melangyna viridiceps, which is a hoverfly found only in Australia.

wallaby1 has suggested that your two pictures are both of either Eupeodes luniger or of Eupeodes corollae.

Looking at this site: http://www.gwydir.demon.co.uk/insects/syrphini.htm
I am pretty sure that yours are E. luniger and with your agreement I would like to move the images to that page: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/4702/

Ooops yes, thanks very much - I can't remember how I came to that ID now (must have been a confused moment) - but please move them as I'm sure you are right. Thanks for the link to that very good site too!

Thanks Hilary, your images have now been moved and you can view them here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/4702/
