Planting Sunflower seeds? Confused

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi,
I have the "Garden Guide for Austin and Vicinity" by the Travis Co. Master Gardener Association and it reads to plant sunflower seeds in September, but on the back of my seed packets it states the Spring.
So I am confused. I have never planted Sunflowers and I have three different varieties and really would like success with these seeds.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Karen

Most perennials and self-sowing annuals are planted in the fall to provide optimum germination and growing for next season. I'd follow the guide from the Master Gardeners in your area over the instructions on your seed packet. Who knows, you may even get a flower before frost!

Thanks a lot Stephanie!
I'll plant them this weekend. A flower would be nice...

Kpoore, Sunflowers are warm weather annuals, and if you get a frost they will die.
If I were you I would plant half my seed now to see what happens, and plant the rest in spring. I have never seen sunflowers growing in winter in this area.

Good test Frost!
I'll do it ...
I am thinking that the seeds I plant now will lay dormant or something and the cold weather may actually help with better Spring production.
