I would like to know if this is as wide as the brug 'Isabella' opens. The other two blooms earlier in the summer only opened this wide and then wilted. If so, I'm kinda disappointed.
Louise
Tell me about your 'Isabella'
Louise,
are you looking at this bloom during the day or the evening? Here's a link to the plant files that show pictures of other people's Isabella. Hope that helps! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/139554/
indiana__lily,
I took those pictures this morning about 9 a.m. I surely hope the blooms open up to show a wider bell and a flip.
I'll check out the plant files.
Thanks,
Louise
I checked the DG files and half of the pictures were fully opened and half were about like mine today.
I have hope !!!!!!
Louise
ZZsBabies,
The first flush (?) was only two blooms and was about 2 or 3 months ago. This is the second with 6 or 8 blooms.
Louise
Yeah, it's probably trying to get established and work out the kinks with blooming. And, if it's hot, they can do some funky things.
What's your weather like? Hot? Fertilizer? Pot size? There are a lot of things could be the cause.. This has been a terrible year for brugs.. at least here I can say that!
We had daily rain during June and July, no rain and 100+ temps in August and Sept. has cooled off to the 90's with sporadiac rain (not much). The brug is in the ground and is about 5+feet tall with two standards and both have Y'd and have a few blooms each. It gets sun from about 10 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m.
Louise
edited to say that I checked again tonight and it had not changed from this morning, just hanging and half open :-(

Wow.. that's really hot and a lot of sun. She may be sweltering a bit. :)
I had mine under the carport and it only got sunrise morning sun till like 10am if that.. then shade the rest of the day.
Isabella like all sangs really droop in the heat of day. I have given away all of my sangs except Isabella, I keep her in the shade. She has been in bloom since late June, that is why we keep her.
Anaid,
I don't know enough to name yours, but it looks just like mine.
kareoke,
Your picture is beautiful. I think maybe you were the one who sent my cutting. Many DGers sent me seeds and cuttings and I didn't have a reliable record keeping system then - and only a little bit better now! I hope mine came from yours and will grow up to bloom that way. Seems like I remember the name being spelled like yours 'Isobella' instead of 'Isabella'. Are those two different brugs , or the same one?
Louise
I am sure they are the same , and yes I did send you cuttings *S*
Well you sure have been a good Brug mommy, she is looking great, if you want a couple of seedlings of different Brugs D Mail me.
My Isabella was always too pale to suit me. But then my brugs never did that great. Then I discovered how acid my soil was and that they were underfertilized. My brugs are doing much better now. The pink I have enjoyed the most and is quite bright here is Satin Rose.
woodspirit1,
Please post a picture of your Satin Rose. I would love to see it. I'm still fairly new to brugs and this is my first year to get lots of blooms. I had a few last year.
Louise
Now she looks like a real southern bell :D Just give her a parasol and some gloves.
Nice job.
Louise, I wouldn't think you would have to cut it down that much in your zone... if you don't have consistant temps at 32 or below, it will survive with just a sheet or a blanket during the frosty nights. If it were mine, I'd only trim back to leaving 4 to 6 nodes above the Y so you will get springtime blooms and be ahead of the "waiting game".
angel_tree_baby,
I'm happy with today but now I am striving for flushes like the ones posted above. What a sight!
ZZsBabiez,
We have several nights in winter that get to 19 degrees with an occasional
15 degrees. I'm debating whether to (before freezes) trim it a little, dig it up and pot it for storage in the workshop or keep it bare-root in a bucket of water in the garage.
Gordo - I'm coming over to your yard with my shovel and truck! ROFL! WOW, what a beauty! Do you have a pic of that trunk or the whole tree?! I bet it's jaw dropping!
TexasLou. I do not have a picture of Satin Rose. I checked the Plantsfiles but the picture there is quite pale compared to mine. I will try to get a picture over the weekend and post it here.
I must say that the pictures of Isabella don't look like the one I had. If she blooms that prolifically and with that color scheme, I might try it again.
Oh wow Louise! I didn't realize how cold you got there! I'm no expert, but I would think that If you can overwinter it inside then I sure would.. it's not that it won't survive outside.. it would probably come back, but sometimes it can take till like June to come back so you wouldn't get springtime blooms..
edited to add: I vote pot it up

LOL, springtime blooms. In zone 6 it takes forever to get blooms. I had a small first flush a few weeks ago and now have a real flush. I have to cut them back and root the cuttings every year. I cannot get the roots to resprout each spring. But the way I get nice plants with a decent flush is fertilize, fertilize, fertilize. I threw everything at them that I ever saw recommended including the Bayer's 2-1 fertilizer to keep the bugs off, bone meal and Black Kow when I planted them, alfalfa tea, epsom salts, liquid kelp and fish emulsion, pelletized chicken manure, triple phosphates and molasses. Mind you, I didn't do all these at once, but at various times, something about every 2 weeks, trying to find the best combo. It worked! I never had many blooms in the past.
We have about 5 and maybe 6 weeks before frost. Because there wouldn't be time for another flush after this one, I think I will probably take my trusty lopers to give it a trim to leave a couple of leaf nodes above the Y's, shovel it out of the ground (no doubt, a big job), pot it up and let it spend the winter in one of my daughters' storage buildings. The thoughts of having to wait until September to see 2008 blooms is not a happy thought.
I just came home last weekend with 15 new brug cuttings and 4 rooted plants from our RU. I knew that space was a problem in winter, but , now it is a very serious problem. I took a car full of plants for other gardeners and came home with a car load of freebies from them. Gardeners are the most generous people I know!
Louise
Lou, I would leave it in the ground. If you did loose it, you can always get more at any swap. I would only keep the more sought after ones inside. As I have said you need to come down in a few weeks and spend the night so we can fix you up with all kinds of Brugs and eat and talk and just get to know each other better. We are going to the international ABAD's swap in Florida in five weeks and you welcome to ride along with us. It will be fun.
Kenboy,
Thanks for the generous offer but there are several things going on here in music with my students at that time.
I'm sure that the RU next year will be more interesting with all the plants you are certain to bring back to Texas!
Thanks also for the info about which brugs to winter inside and which to leave outside. I know I have a lot to learn.
Louise
