God awful gnats

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

Is anyone else having a problem with gnats at night? If I have a light on, I have to shut the doors and windows. They come right through the screens. I came into my studio and the ceiling was black with them. I used the vaccume to suck them up and then shut everything. It's hot in here now, but I don't think I can use "Too many Gnats" as an excuse for not working.

I swear, they are beating them selves senseless on the windows trying to get in. What are they?

I haven't seen any here. I guess they know winter is coming and they want inside. Maybe you can spray your screens with insecticide to deter them from coming in. My Mom has bad lungs so I keep the house shut up with the air on to keep the humidity out. It also helps keep the bugs out as well. :) Kind of hard on the electric bill though. ha!

I tried raid. It didn't impress them. Most of them seem to die by morning anyway. They are beating on my windows again tonight. Last night I made the mistake of opening the door to let the cat out before I went to bed. All the gnats that were on the door poured into the room. I had to get the vacume out again. I've found if you just wave it around the lights, it sucks up the flying ones, then I do the ceiling.

I haven't had them that bad either. They mostly bother us walking in the woods.
It seems that fun for them is to fly into your eye. Most of the time they get caught in the lashes, but we have had to pluck some out of the eye. It hurts.
Sometimes you can't even look at something, for all the black dots swimming in front of your eyes!
It is been not too bad lately. A joy to walk throught the woods without the black flies, skeeters and deer flies.
The colored leaves litter the trail. Nice.

A word of caution about spraying insecticides. It could damage the paint/finish on your windows.

Can't see out the windows for all the gnat poop anyway, but thanks for the tip.

Could maybe those sticky hanging traps help? With a light by it? or a bug zapper?
Sounds like an awful problem.

I tried the bug zapper, but with these numbers, it didn't seem to help. Maybe the sticky traps would help. It will be better now that it's cool and I don't have the windows open. The biggest problem is in my studio as I have bright lights and work with one just a few feet over my head and of course I work in there at night. I'm thinking they will dissapear after a frost, but I'mnot looking forward to that. I just wondered if any one else was having the problem or if it was just happening here. Evidently it is just here. Go figure.

All the gnats are attracting spiders, so now I have spider webs all over the porch and windows. You can see the webs from across the yard because they are so full of gnats. I wouldn't mind the spiders if they didn't POOP on everything. I think if they need an indistructable material, they ought to look at spider poop. I have to use a green scrubbie on the windows.

It's so hard being OCD.

Maybe you could move Mr Toad into your room.
LOL
Well, hope you make it through this invasion. Cold weather is coming and that should fix your problem.

Cold weather ? cold weather ?? We don't want no stinkin' cold weather.

Most bugs have a life cyle, if that's any consolation.

Unfortunately these guys are trying to shorten mine by flying up my nose, in my mouth and at my eyes. I'd rather not snort gnats!

And the toad gets $1.50 a dozen crickets, thank you very much.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

You spoil him! He should be working that room for you. LOL
I have had the gnats up my nose too. How can a little thing be so annoying?
Do they do it on purpose and the others fly around laughing?
Watch the big animal swat itself! Great fun for all. I bet there is a little gnat selling tickets for the show you are putting on for them.
(that is my theroy on bugs, I swear I hear them laugh)

Haven't you ever noticed he sacrificial mosquito? He is the one that buzzes by your ear so you swat him and go deaf, then the others move in without fear.

I think I just discovered that these gnats are actually fruit flies! I came in my studio with some toast and jam and they attacked it. Who knew fruit flies came out at night. Now, if I could just find the fruit that is attracting them....

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh, that is it.
Hope you find what is attracting them.
