I can definitely vouch for the poor crop of cones in Maine this fall. I only found a couple Fir trees with cones, but they were inaccessible. I did score a single Taxus canadensis seed! I lost the rest... :(

What a coincidence that you posted that link. I was about to post a possible irruption of Red-breasted nuthatches as I've had a few already here at my feeder in southern Wisconsin. Never have I had any this early in the year. Usually I get some in January and February but never in September. A few showed up last week before any White-breasted ones.
