(¯`'•.¸ Super Rust ¸.•'´¯)

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

I posted this info on another forum hope it helps my friends at Daves!
=======================================================
Hey plumerians!
I been testing many products these past years and have posted here and other forums
what works and what didn't for me..
Since i been hurt my trees growing in the ground around my house have been neglected..
Before i got hurt i had rust on all my trees this is a normal thing for florida growers..
Anyways 3 weeks ago the rust was in full bloom and all my lower leaves we so bad that if you walk
by them you would have orange stains all over you.
The super rust as i called it stop all flower production and shorten the length of new leaves..
The SR (super rust) even made all the leaves curl up and shrivel, it was pretty bad...
I also suspected rust mites came in and took over due to the many red stained leaf curls i was also seeing..
What i mean by red stain curls is that the plumie leaves shrivel up and curl onto themselves and the outer
edges will have a soild band of red in them almost like the leaf is bleeding..
When this happens the inflos will grow very short thus makeing the flowers if any grow much smaller and fewer then normal..
This massive outbreak occurred with no rain at all for 7 weeks which was a surprise..
The only tree that was fighting off the rust and still producing blooms was the local variety Flamingo or Pink Flamingo
or possibly Dainty Pink another reason why i love that tree.

Well i had some products i didn't test yet so i hop on my crutches and told my worker how to mix one of the products..
The product was Dithane 75DF (powder) and i supplement it with Capsil a spray adjuvant thats silicone based.
I pick Dithane because it is a broad spectrum fungicide and i pick Capsil because it is known to have great penetration ability.
In order to kill rust and prevent it from recurring in the growing season a spread sticker cannot be just a sticker like a soap base product it has
to penetrate the leaf tissue and work within the cells of the plant in order to kill off the infection.
All great foilar sprays are just sprays unless you use a good penetrator to carry those nutrients into the cells where the plant can use them.
The best time to spray anything on the leaves IMHO is around sunset because the leaf stomatas will be open..
The stomata (like pores of your skin) are affected by light and drought conditions and this is why they are on the underside of the leaves.
As you may know most of the plumie problems occur on the underside of the leaves also..
The first treatment was on Sept 1 followed by the second on Sept 14 and then a monitoring cycle of 7-10 more days after that.
Today after 2 treatments 7 days apart followed by the monitoring cycle i venture outside and inspected all the trees and plants that were spray.
The results were impressive to say the least!
The rust was completely gone and all the leaves were healthy and of normal size again..
The leaves that were infected either died off and fell off the tree or had rust remains that turn blackish brown/grey indicating the cell walls were destroyed.
The remaining infected leaves had strong rigor to them again like they never been infected..
Flower production has return to normal and the trees and plants are produceing new growth at a fast rate typical of summer..
To make sure my test wasn't influence by certain varities i had 1500 trees/plants sprayed and the results were all the same.
There are other products that growers have reported that work well and i am only adding my test to the list so use what works for you.
I hope this info can add another weapon to your arsenal!

Both products were purchase from my friends at http://www.southernag.com/commercial.htm

Quoting:
To this date there is no organic product i tested or currently on the market that kills rust in a full blown outbreak in a humid area like Florida NONE!
No corn meal or baking soda remedy never worked on all my plants but a few varieties seem to like organics but were quickly reinfected again by the other plants.

capsil is a great surfactant, it has really changed the way we have to spray! It sure is expensive though-I paid $ 75.00/gallon for it. In comparison, a gallon of regular surfactant is about $ 10.00
I try to use regular surfactant when spraying certain things that it is not imperative that I get the spray underneath the leaf-like a foliar fungus on the leaves etc, to save money. It is near impossible though to spray the under leaves of pansies for aphids though, and Capsil is great there!
How much did you pay for yours Lopaka? Looking at that website and the packaging-are they saying that you have to get 4/1 gallons of it at once? Or 12 /1 qts of Subdue at once? That is over $1000.00! I have never seen a wholesale place do that with chemicals before.

I paid $70 i think per gallon..
SouthernAG sells by the gallon also..
I just got off the phone with Darren from SouthernAG and he told me there is a real cheap product that has Dithane and Eagle in it.
The product is called Clevis
http://www.prokoz.net/fungicides.lasso#5053

Darren said it cost $8.45 per pound and it is sold by them in 2lb bags.
That is really really cheap for 2 great products.
I wish i knew that before hand lol..
Dithane is not systemic so the fact Clevis uses Eagle also pretty much covers that.
Thanks for the info Tiger!
;)

Your welcome, Lopaka, but I don't think that I really gave you any info! You had it all right there! Here is a question though-since I just spent some time spraying for rust on the plumerias this weekend-by hand with Neem...its on my mind, and I have never had to deal with rust before this summer, so I don't know much about it. Ok-heres the question. Clearys is a systemic (can be used as one) and the label says that it treats rust-but does a systemic work on rust? I get the feeling that even if i preventative spray with Clearys and drench it, that that won't prevent it-that rust needs to be sprayed directly on it-contact spray. Do you know if a systemic like Clearys will prevent rust?

Did you ask him about the 12 qts of Subdue at one time? That just seems so much at once. Subdue lasts a long time. Full strength is 2T/100 gallons of water.

Robert,

I use the granular Bayelton around my plants with good results over a long period of time--especially for the potted ones. For those pesky rust mites, I use Avid, with splendid results. I have a real problem each year with these critters invading, with or withour rust, and this stuff knocks them right on down when they start showing up. Next year I want to try FORBID as it also kills the eggs.

Dr.Chase says to use a 2 method attack for example spray Dithane for the contact kill and then after 7-10 days use a systemic spray to further penetrate the cells to fight off future attacks..
=======================
Hey Brad,
I have the granular Bayelton, but as you know my feeding program consist of very expensive hydroponics nutrients also with my humic acid injections in the soil all that would be destroyed,,
I have to use a foilar spray (fine mist) and since this dithane killed on contact and left no ill effects on any plants i am a happy camper now..
The dithane has Mag,and Zinc in it too..
The Dithane seems to have wiped out all the bugs which is kool, also the capsil is a very slick like oil substance which has penetrating properties so who knows that may have help too..
I will used my grans on my trees around the yard tho bud..
Can you let us know about the other products??
Brad i was thinking today about a conversation we had one day about Adeniums and the issues with aphids and other bugs.
I have over 100 thai Adeniums on a some tables outside and haven't seen them in 6 weeks because they are hard to get to..
Anyways i finally look at them today and to my surprise there was no insects on any of them..
Buttt..
On each of them were 2-3 Assassin bugs i mean there must be hundreds of them lol..
http://www.ivyhall.district96.k12.il.us/4TH/KKHP/1INSECTS/assassin.html
How lucky can you get?
They kill any bad insect especially aphids so i am happy to have them..
