Houseplants

Mount Airy, MD(Zone 6a)

Hello everyone -

I'm interested in some advice re: houseplants. I live in old stone house that has deep windows. I get eastern light in my kitchen but away from the windows there is minimum light (example: at my kitchen table). I'm looking for a plants that like these conditions, I'd love to have african violets but I'm not sure about the humidity requirements. Otherwise I'd love some variegated or interesting shape foliage - I think I need more light for these!

Thanks for your advice, everyone.

hello, 3springs..................there seem to be so many people from MD on DG................I am hoping that Plantladylin comes along to help some more......................You can always grow a lot of houseplants in water which are pretty.............let me see if i can hyperlink you to some that like low light conditions.............there are some beautiful pothos now.........especially Marble queen..............

There is nothing prettier than a big vase full of syngonium or arrowhead plant..........mine are outside but grow beautiful like pothos in either water or a light soil-less mix.............Schultz av mix, etc............

I think you could do a lot with terrariums................just get from discount stores or Hobby Lobby those big round vases and you can cover the top with saran wrap.................in the terrariums you could use fittonia, episcias, african violets and other plants that like humid conditions..........

fittonias come in pink and green, green and white, red and green, etc.............they love the humidity of a covered vase or plastic salad bowls put together..............

Do you have a kitchen window where you could grow streptocarpus.............one of our DGers lives in Idaho where it is already freezing at night and she says her streps love the cooler weather right up against a window............where there is ice on the other side of the window.............
Are you familiar with streps.............I will show you a few after this post

Here is what a streptocarpus looks like................so easy when it is cool enough for them......prefer 55-75 degrees..............They come in the most beautiful colors................red, purple, etc...........

One last suggestion...................forcing bulbs like hyacinth, paperwhites, amaryllis and others...................

paperwhites are just placed on rocks with water underneath the bulbs..........they are so fragrant..........

maybe our plantladylin will find this thread......
