The Naked Ladies are at it again!

They aren't called surprise lilies for nothing. In the middle of a bed where they have never been ~ I find these blooms this morning. They popped up quickly after a slow soaking rain on Saturday night.

What a delight! Has anyone else been graced with their presence?

My sister has them! They come up in her flower beds and in her yard. I was gonna get the ones out of her yard but her stupid lawn guy mowed over them and now I can't find them.

When did they mow them down? What color were hers?

Mine bloom in fall with no foliage. After the blooms die, the foliage will come up. The foliage shouldn't be mowed till it dies. That is how the bulbs get their nutrients for the next bloom season.

He mowed 'em 'bout 2 weeks ago. Hers are red, also. Guess I'll have to wait til next year.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

No, wait till the foliage comes up. It still will but may not bloom the first year after transplanting. You could also loosen the ground where they were with a spading fork and search for the bulbs.

Surely the mowing season is almost over.

So these are the (bare) naked ladies mentioned in the DL thread! No wonder they need a marker.Podster, if yours are in a bed , what are they interplanted with? I have the spider lily that right now is completely dormant. I have a few markers, but still worry I will dig them up accidently.

I just said on that thread that mine had never bloomed. Well...this week they did, but I almost missed it.

Sheila, what are yours mixed with?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Bananna ~ these are mixed in with Iris, Narcissus, Daffodils, Jonquils, trailing purple Lantana and there is some Tahitian bridal veil that is tenacious. It is near an old compost pile and I did not plant these here. Or.. if I did, I am getting mentally feeble. I also have them circle a small bed where my Texas star is. I just keep that bed mulched with pine straw. I think about enlarging it occasionally but need to wait till these girlies foliage turns yellow to dig them up.

Sheila ~ I agree you almost miss these blooms. I would not have noticed but saw the red back in the corner... I think a good soaking rain helps trigger the blooms. Something we have been lacking in....

Mine looked like they were damaged a bit. I was just digging up something in that area last week and moving it. I knew those were there, but the stake was over further. I may have hit them or disturbed them. But at least I know they will bloom.
Anna, I am not one to plant anything near anything, sorry to say. Maybe after I retire I can be more organized in my planting. I just worry more about shade, sun, etc. They have a Chinese Fringe Flower, iris, yellow yarrow, and Autumn Joy near by. see what I mean? LOL

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I was mainly wondering if you had taller plants nearby or had them mixed with low ones.Looks like you are more organized than you think, cause there is perennial color all season
Podster, nice idea to have alot of bulbs. You say you didn't plant them naked ladies there? I wonder if it is like garlic, if just a little peice is in the soil, eventually there will be a plant.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Bananna ~ I think because it was the location of an old compost pile... I had probably accidently weeded and chunked a start of these in it. I had abandoned that compost pile as it was a battle with the tree roots when I would try to turn it.

These spider lilies don't bloom for me every year. Last year I didn't have the first bloom. If they had ever volunteered in that location before, I can't remember it. The bulb on these are close to a small onion in shape.

Incidentally, I did not know it but each clove on a garlic will be a plant if planted or left in ground. They don't all grow at the same time however. Your comment made me think of that... pod

Looks like red smoke rings!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Boy the color is way too intense for my limited photography knowledge. Not crop circles but flower circles... lol

Thanks for looking Sheila ~ always fun to share the insanity... 8 )

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it is...I can't think of a better insanity to fill my time.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Wonderful photos! I hope you tell everyone we were all were admiring naked ladies!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL ~ I wonder if that's why they are "red" blushing?
