Looks a bit like my cape gooseberries but the leaf is not soft and "furry"...and more heart shaped....I think tomatillas??? or whatever you have in that mexican food might be it ...perhaps someone spat a seed out or a bird pooped it!...make sure it is ok before you eat the berry inside the lantern .....mine turn parchment like when ready.

Cambria, CA

Looks like tomatillo to me

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Wouldn't that be a happy surprise. Especially for a gourmet like yourself. Hope so.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

That's what I thought it looked like, but everyone keeps saying that it can't be. DD planted eggplant in that spot, but it sure doesn't look like eggplant to me! I'm hoping it IS tomatillo! There are lots of things I can do with that!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Looks like tomatillo to me too!

Chrissy - I think the Texans and Californians have supported your idea of the tomatillo. And if anyone should know, it would certainly be them. Thanks everyone! Hey there Randy!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi there,
Ya know when you told me about the tropical forum..I thought to myself...I never see you over there. I was updating my preferences the other day..and noticed..Tropicals and Tropical Gardening...I didn't know about the tropical gardening forum...so now it's all making sense! I added it to my forum list.

I thought about you the other day- I was doing some research on the Findhorn Garden, and came on this website called everything2.com - while it has good information, it's also a website that you can post things you write like poems, stories...and there are forums of discussion for those things people discuss alot...if you know what I mean.

hey r tell your mates....it is great fun over here!
as you are from Texas maybe you can tell me what a tomatillo tastes like/ and how you use it? We don't have them here as far as I know....I am curious....our cape gooseberries taste like a sweet acid tomato.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

What a nice way of calling me a blabbermouth! LOL! You just have to come and get a hug when I'm in Houston!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Chrissy - they sound like the same thing. A sweet acid tomatoe. The basis for one of the worlds greatest meals - Chile Verde. When I make it, the island beats a path to my door. Must admit - its my specialty. Also makes a very good salsa, cut up in salads, I like on eggs....

MMMMsounds good but ours must be a sweeter taste it is made into sweet tarts and fruit fools....I like it straight from the bush.....what colour were the flowers?....ours are yellow...the fruit a lovely gold colour...what does a tomatilla flower look like did you see it? and is the fruit red?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL,
Well, it's really the "the topics that must not be named" that you can talk about over there!

Yes Chrissy, sounds like the same taste. I think our climates (Sydney & Houston) are pretty similar, I bet they would grow there. Your summers at least felt like our summers when I was there a couple of times.. Hot and humid.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

No, fruit is green.....and not terribly sweet, more acidic. Flowers are small and a creamy white, almost yellow.

LOL! I like it ...."the topics that must not be named"....sounds so sinister doesn't it?? Do you participate there?

Oh ....you have been here? where did you visit?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes - a few times, 1996, 97 and 99...and planning this summer beginning of march.

LOL...yes I got that from Harry Potter..."He who must not be named" I just modified it a big. I actually did sign up. I'm still finding my way around there, but I did make a note to mention it to you.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I will check it out. But not sure I need another site where I will get so involved in trying to convince other folks that I am the keeper of all knowledge, if ya know what I mean....I do tend to get a little carried away! (Who moi??? No!)

Sorry r I meant where ...what places?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

One guess would be Cairns....am I right Randy?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Sydney and Melbourne.
My friend did take me on road trip into the country outside of Melbourne, although I couldn't recall the name of the area. It was a real treat because we stayed at one of his friends who had arranged dinner (tea?) at one of the ranchers/farmers place. I do remember large flocks of Cockatoos, and the irony of one bird costing 300 dollars here, and the farmers thinking the only good Cockatoo was a dead one!

Yes I know what you mean about signing up on another place. That's why I'm slow to figure it out over there. It took me 3 or 4 years to even begin to utilze this one.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ya know...no...I have not been there. I had forgotten we fly there, and even checked it out as an option of getting to SYD this March, but I'm getting to old for flying to HNL, GUM, Cairns just to get to Sydney...I'm going to buy a ticket this time.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Shari.......secret life??????heh?? We're waiting.....

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

No secret...Randy just knows that I get carried away on topics that are generally taboo in DG....you know Christi - those threads I showed you about Gore's movie and such.

Randy - I know the long way round is a bit of a hassle, but oh how I loved Cairns! So very, very worth the trip! Was there a week, and could have stayed much, much longer! I too want to get to Sydney....my dream would be to hear Domingo in the Opera House and then dive the GBR! I dream big! And I would love to see Chrissy's place. Someday.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep. Let's see now......going to Kwaj, Hawaiia, Sydney, Beaumont, Houston.......SPAIN.
Just have to sell my house....but wait....my gardens....

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I love the round about route,Loooocyyyy! Going to Beaumont and Houston via Kwaj....I sure like your style!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

When Mike was traveling....for some 35 years......seemed that he always went to Lubbock first......hhhhmmmm

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

"Eat Dust......Lubbock, Tx" Have it on a shirt, cuz that was exactly what I thought of the place....ooops I probably just offended a ton o texans.....soooorrrrryyyy.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, I would love to go Cairns, Duck Island and visit some of the tropical portions. I am fortunate to have had friends to stay with in MEL and SYD. Yes, dream big! You might enjoy a movie that's come out on video called "The Secret". I saw it today, and it's all about dreaming big. It's along the lines of "What the bleep do we know anyway" Quantum mechanics type thing. I actually thought I was renting some fun Indiana Jones movie or something like that.

LOL...LouC. I'm starting to plan my trips around not leaving the gardens. No one takes care of it like we do!

Hope you all get to Sydney one day....what a pity you guys missed the Olympics here the most amazing vibe......it was like the World came to visit and discovered we were more than the Opera House kangaroos and crocodile hunters....the visitors and we ozzies just had the most wonderful time......but that was in another World...another time before the World tilted on it's axis!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Yes indeed....deep sigh and moment of silence for what was...

The Olympics is my most favoritest time ever! Watch every possible moment of every possible event. I love the whole idea of sport, hate the controversies (sp?) and make up my own mind...cry at all the anthems....at all the underdogs who never give up....my perfect world. Luckily for me, DH feels the same, so the recorder is always on and very little sleep for two weeks. And I love it!
