AROIDGARDENER, Did you take the picture? If you did wher was it taken? I saw one at Fairchild garden the last time i was at the IAS Show a few years ago, no name but i though it was a Heliconia? I would like one too! jerry

I didn't take the picture. Someone sent it to me once to see if I knew what it was. I never followed up with her to see if she found out what it is.

I didn't see one this year at Fairchild's. Though after the Aroid show/sale, we only went to the tropical house.

some type of variegated heliconia comes to mind. Rare, pricey and beautiful, oh, and very tropical. I don't think it survives in areas cooler than z10.

It is a heliconia, You can see a pic of it at www.heliconiaparadise.com. It's name is 'Heliconia indica cv. Striata', if you look at the website the two above it are gorgeous too. They are very hard to find, this is the only person i know of that is selling the species.

Thank you!!! I never would have thought it was a heliconia.

I am going to be getting several rhizomes of this from a friend. Really is a nice looking heliconia, the variegation is very different from most.

Hey Popper1, nice to see someone close by. I'm in Plant City.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow, almost neighbors!

Yes, and I see you're in zone denial too....

Is this heliconia something you will keep in a pot and drag inside somewhere for protection in the winter? I've noticed that the heliconias I have, if I don't keep them from going dormant, they won't flower the next year. Of course with the variegated heliconia, it would look great like it is w/o flowers.

I'll put it in the ground. I have three pendant types in the ground & one small upright in a pot, only because I cant decide where to put it. They have made it fine through the winter.

It's a
verycoolineedthisplantinmygarden That's the latin version. :)

It can be tough to grow, it is temperamental and needs PREFECT drainage.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL..I couldn't resist.

Yeah..I have a few of those kind of plants that need perfect drainage...It keeps ya busy!

Oh boy, I'll have to think about this....... Aside from watering if we don't get enought rain, my plants are pretty much on their own.....though I do have some finicky Aroids. Will have to see if I can find a perfect place.....
