Hi and sorry to bother everyone. I'm Alex, Lourdes' son. My mother got me addicted to Hoyas now and I find it to be a really relaxing hobby (which alleviates some stress from school) for me. I recently came upon two hoyas (I believe they are both hoyas), and I was wondering if I could get help identifying them. The first one I was sent, and it had no id on it. I am pretty sure this is a hoya though, and I've posted a picture of it. The second one I will put in a second posting below. They are both in 4 inch pots.
Here's the first.
Help Identifying Two Hoyas Please!!!
This second one came in a plant I bought from a nursery that we know is a Pubicalyx. The plant was huge and all tangled up, so when we untangled it, we found that there were actually three different plants. The Pubicalyx, a carnosa and this one. For that reason, I believe it is also a hoya, but i am guessing it could be a dischidia as well. It is not a Shepardii, as we have one of those and this one doesn't have leaves nearly as thick as that one. We also don't think it is a Kentiana (as it looks different). For that reason we are stumped, and wanted to know if anyone here would be able to identify them. I want to also thank everyone on this forum for all their help and kindness. My mom raves about this site, and she stays on it for hours reading and learning from everyone. This is truly a wonderful collection of great people, and I really appreciate all the kindness you've shown to my mom. Thank you again!
Sincerely,
Alex
Hi Alex, I can only take a stab at identifying your plants, but I do think that you're correct that they both are hoyas. The leaves on the first look like macgillivrayi or onychoides perhaps. The leaves and wiry stems on the second look like my chlorantha, and my chlorantha var. tuitilensis. It also looks a lot like pictures that I have seen of Hoya sp. Tanna Island.
They both look nice and healthy though. What wonderful kind things your mom says about everyone on the hoyas forum. Welcome to our addiction. HA!! Good luck trying to keep it under control. Every time I am sure that I don't have even a single spot left, I am able to squeeze half a dozen more in!
Yes, plants are a great way to escape from school stresses and pressures, and since it is such a little escape, it is always easy to jump right back in.

Nice finds Alex! Your Mom is a Sweetheart and so are you! My Son is about your age and I have tried everything to get him in to plants and gardening. I have told your Mom I am a little jealousl
Just FYI, be careful assigning names to your new Hoyas until after they bloom. The leaves can fool you. The ID'ing is part of the fun of collecting. Sara made a great call on the names. Just don't invest too much in the label until you have flowers.
What are you studying in school? You sound like a budding Horticulturist!
Say Hi to Mom.
Mel
Thank you Ms. Sara and Ms. Mel for your responses. Ms. Mel, my mom says she's jealous of your greenhouse and sunroom, so "we're even" (lol). It has become an addiction for me as well. I'm actually studying to be a math teacher/coach. Next semester I do student teaching and by this time next year, I'll be teaching at a middle school. I'm looking really forward to it as I really enjoy teaching. I'll make sure to check the names of the hoyas out, and I'll (try to at least) patiently wait before labeling them. Thank you so much again!

Those are both very nice hoyas. The first hoya looks just like my macgilvryae (or however you spell that). I see you are in Austin, may I ask where you purchased these? I'm always looking for new places to seek out plants! Lol...
Thanks for the help. As I said, it was wrapped in another plant. The place is called the great outdoors on congress near Ben White. They had 2 types there, the one we got, a Pubicalyx and they had a carnosa. They were pretty well developed. Decent Price too.
Here's their website.
