Cement dust and eye irritation in dog

Claremore, OK

I'm posting this in case other folks have a dog that likes to stay close while you are doing projects.

This really frightened me last night when my dog's eyes became inflamed. I tried to think what was "different" about yesterday. My husband put in some footing for a bridge yesterday. He used about 20 bags of 'Quikrete' cement. The dust was coming out of the mixer pretty good. The dog was "hanging out" with my husband. That evening I notice the dog's eyes getting very red. The only thing unusual I can think of that he was exposed to was the 'Quikrete.'

The bag says can cause eye and skin irritations. So, put your dog inside if you are working with cement and chemicals that can cause human skin and eye irritation.

We flushed his eyes optimalic eye wash we had on hand. We did it about five times in two hours and the dog seemed to improve quickly. This morning the dog had some goop looking mucus in one eye so we flushed again. Right now he looks normal.
