MOTTO: Never leave a gessie behind! How to save money to buy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We hope this thread will be a riot!!!!!!! I can't have both gessies and clothes, etc................
Please share how you save money so that you never have to leave a gessie behind..............

Easy...I never tell Hubby exactly how much money is in the bank :))

Since he never touches a bank card or sets foot in a bank, he's blissfully ignorant of our funds.

I'll eat Chef Boyardee for a week as lunch at work, to save enough to order a plant I really want!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Well I have done this on more than one occasion...I walk into a store that has beautiful houseplants at reasonable prices and I see something lovely, a huge spider plant with 2 or 3 dozen babies flying around it or the most unique leaves on a philodendron. I put said plant into my cart and do the rest of my shopping the whole time telling myself what's one more house plant and it's such a good bargain.....

But.... I get to the check stand and picture (in my mind) the latest Strep that has grabbed my attention and made it to my want list or a beautiful AV and I realize my house is only so big and I would so much rather see some beautiful blooms filling up what space I do have and I march that houseplant right back to it's hanger and leave without it!! I've had more than one person standing in line behind me watch me battle it out and then walk the plant back. I know they think I must be a nut. LOL

But the gessies (and the hoyas) are winning the battle every time!

Economize on electricity...don't vacuum!..save time and money for plants and grow lights.

Hah! Cleaning house and cooking in general have gone by the wayside since I started in with plants last winter!! Who has the time when there is a leaf to put down or babies to transplant or rearranging the ones with the best blooms to the right spot to enjoy them the most! :)))

My DD says I should give all my plants a name since they have now taken the place of my children! LOL

I am cutting back on paper goods.............except when my plants need paper towels to absorb water up.............................paper goods are a waste.........much more economical to use rags and wash ...................also hand wash dishes..........I live by myself...........

Clothes are a waste of money really..............I would rather place an order for plants than buy a good pair of slacks or shirt...............anyday...........

This may have started out as a joke but you all give us some good ideas..........I need it........something has to give in this household...................so i can have the plants I want

Snow is on a roll this morning, isn't she!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gail I've been using newspaper to absorb the water from my plants, it works great and recycles it too! I'll put a single layer of paper towels over the top of the newspapers so no messy ink problems but then the newspapers do most of the absorbing instead of lots and lots of paper towels!

fabulous idea...............potting up is what I am doing now.................good idea!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes, I just get old bath towels to keep from using up so many paper towels......but yours is a better idea.............thanks

ok...if you promise not to laugh...I'll tell a little money making idea I do on occasion.
I have been known to drive really slow along the side of the road when I'm going to town and collect beer bottles (we can get 10 cents a bottle here)out of the ditches.....good pickings on a Sat or Sun after people have been partying the night before :)) On a good weekend I can collect 15 or 20 dollars to stash in my purse for a plant "emergency".

I guess I should be really glad there are no nurseries locally that sell Gesneriads! I do lurk on different internet sites at times, but usually forget about ordering. I have ordered a few times from Bluebird and also a couple of times from Robs ... but that's about it. Now .... I never met any plant I didn't like (except cactus & thorny plants) .... and I for a long time had a habit of buying at least two plants almost every time I would go into Wal-Mart! I have always parked by the garden center entrance and come and go through that end of the store cause it's right by the exit to the street I go home on. I'm glad that lately I haven't seen anything in there I don't already have! And, I went to Home Depot the other day to get LFS (which they were out of) and I actually walked out of there without buying a plant ... their plants looked terrible! hee hee .... I did look!

I really need to put myself on a budget! I KNOW I could save money in a lot of ways .... I waste electricity a lot, run the dishwasher when it's not really full .... do laundry when I don't have a full load! hmmmmm .... see I just need to make a list and I know I could find ways to save quite a bit. With the $$ I saved I could open a "special" account at the bank called my Gessie Account!

I don't spend money on clothes anymore. I haven't worked in 15 years so no more dresses, suits etc! I live in shorts and tank tops or t-shirts from April to November and then come the jeans and sweat shirts. One nice thing about living in Florida .... we don't need heavy winter clothes! I haven't owned a coat in 40 years!

I could save by not buying so many paper towels ... I use a lot of them! And, Gail is right .... money saved by using old towels or rags for mopping up messes.

Gail: You've really given me something to think about! I bet if I cut down and cut back on some things I would be able to have extra $$$ for plants as well as other treats! I do like to recycle. I use those little applesauce and fruit cups for rooting leaves and little plants. Saves on buying dixie cups. And, I wash and use jars for rooting cuttings of plants!

hee hee ... gotta laugh at Snow's comment about vacuuming. I don't do that much as it is! My hubby will come home and run the vacuum sometimes for me! So, I guess I am already saving electricity there!
