I bought a papaya from the grocery store today. I love papaya but I actually bought it for the seeds. The last time I bought one, years ago, there were several seeds in it. Today there was one lonely little seed in the papaya. I will plant it, but I would have liked to have more chances for germination. I guess I will have to go buy another papaya!
How long do the seeds have to dry out....what do I need to do for it to germinate?

One seed!!?? I've never seen that! Ours have hundreds of little black seeds! One - I'm stunned.....
Ours have tons too, except the red fleshed papaya which seem to have fewer - but more than one!
I haven't planted any papaya, the birds do more than enough for us. They even sprout from falling onto the ground from the tree. I think you have to dry them out for a couple of days until the gelatinous stuff is gone and probably plant them in warm soil like we have here...
I haven't got any ripe ones at the moment, but can send you some seeds next time we pick....

That is really strange 77 ...they usually have heaps....go get some more...try a different type...perhaps the one you bought was a sterile hybrid....like my persimmons.How are you ?.......you know ging into fall there it may be no good trying to do the seed thing with the papaya....usually you put them in so that they can have a good warm season.....they love living near bricks and seem to thrive near the air conditioning outlets ( maybe the water dripping out and the warm motor going. Chrissy, I've really been struggling to get my strength back! We had been on the go taking my Mom to the Dr. that I was at a real low when the flare hit. Now it is just taking so long to start feeling better. It just takes time....can't rush it.
Patience.....and that is so hard when there are things that need to be done!

Never considered that the ground is warmer around the AC unit. Explains why the Japanese Maple closest to it is struggling.
What I have noticed ....when people from tropical climates come to live here ...they plant their mangoes and papaya in positions near the air con and the brick... these trees are in fruit even in the winter...the air con drips warm water into the ground as well as the warm moter running all the time......just a thought.....how long does the warm weather continue for you there....don't forget that even if the days are hot....it is the night temp that dictates the tenderness of the tropicals.

Had to go to the store for a few things so picked up another papaya, and guess what! Wa-La....lots of seeds! They are drying on the patio! I will probably start them in little pots and then transfer to a bigger one until I figure out where to put it. My son reminded me that where I had planned to put it is on an easement, so not a good idea.
I've also been having computer problems. DG would not load! Dearest Son (my personal tech) cleaned out some areas for me, defragged, so now we are back in business!
Chrissy, we usually have nice weather until Jan and Feb. It gets cold then and last year we had about four freezes that got down to 28 F for at least four hours each in the night. I have a canopy that I have canvas on that I zip up. I bring the plumies and tender things in there during the winter.
We will probably have to move a banana tree to put it over there by the AC unit. next spring. Not a problem. Son already said he would.
Great!...yes the daves garden thing has been a bit hard to deal with today dropping out a lot ...not coming in....oh well .....good luck with the seeds I didn't even dry mine ...just shoved them straight in....like most of the seeds I grow.....in a warmish place ...with a little bit of dappled shade if the sun is fierce...just until they sprout....usually pretty quickly ....don't forget though you need boys and girls to make the fruit.
After putting the seeds in the ground, and they sprout, as seedlings is there a way to tell which is which? I have a limited amount of space. It looks like they can get really tall. How can I determine which is which? So far from the research it only showed each as a mature plant.
You can't tell until they flower.....
yes the boys have a different flower ...and I can't remember which is which but one sex grows a lot quicker than the other.
We have plants in the nursery that are bi sexual but I am pretty sure that just means a boy piece and a girl piece are grown on the one stem.

I have sooooooo many seeds ...that one papaya a few years ago grew into MANY trees with so many papayas..that they are growing wild in the garden now as I had to just let the fruit drop to the ground. They were very sweet tasting, and must be a hybrid as they don't subscribe to the male, female rolls. Every tree produces Papaya.
This year was not a good year for papayas..too much rain, although I do have a tree growing some now..

You have done a fantastic job! The papaya I bought looks like the one from your tree! I have the seeds drying now. I think I will keep them in pots for quite awhile.

Yes fantastic thread r.....I have seen something somewhere ...that says that once they reah a comfotable height ...(so you can pick them ) the lead is cut and an upturned can is placed over the cut ...to keep the rain out...this article said that it cause a lot more fruit to be set as it branched a lot more (sort of like pruning)....have you heard of such a thing?....yours are so good it isn't a problem with you....but it might help others.

Yes Chrissy, we do that with our papaya here in Hawaii. Papaya rot easily hence the can or bucket, as you say....
Yes I've also done that, but I used a wine cork to plug the holes...I think I will try the cans next time. I've had to cut a few from the freeze last year and about half of them survived me cutting them. Some I think I pulled out of the ground prematurely, and it even looked like the root went dormant for half the summer as it was still nice and firm. I just had way too many other plants going on to take that experiment further.
If there is a side to error on, it should be to keep the trees on the dry side.
