Irving, TX

Well I have just spent a couple of hours preparing the cuttings that Gessie sent me to get me started in Gessie world. I am so excited. They are all put to bed. Now the waiting begins.

Lin is right...it's a streptocarpella. I love those. The blossoms are carried on long wiry stems.

Can I root cuttings in pearlite?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You can root in perlite or any light porous mix. Cover cuttings with a clear baggie, enclose, or dome in some way to maintain humidity till rooted.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so happy for you Begoniadude............you are off and running now...............Snow sent me my first streptocarpella cuttings................

(Zone 1)

I have a little Streptocarpella I got in a trade with RainGazer back in April and it's FINALLY beginning to bloom!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Snow's pic looked so pretty..........I have a basket outside and a pot inside under lights and still no blooms..........the one outside doesn't get sun.............does it need sun, plantladylin?

(Zone 1)

I didn't think so but my sister in N. Georgia has a really humongous pot of it on her back deck that gets intense full sun for many hours a day and it is absolutely Gorgeous! Blooms for her the entire summer!

Those are really nice, Begoniadude. Where do you get the tray and cover from?

Irving, TX

It was a Wal-Mart clearance item. : ) I love sales.... The real expense was the medium.

Happy birthday to me.... Happy birthday to me... Happy birthday dear Begonia Dude... happy birthday to me. Well here is the story. A couple of weeks ago I posted a link to the plant light stand that I wanted to buy. I was very excited to find one that was really inexpensive. After posting about it I then approaced my wife. She emphaticly told me that I could not order it and to stop talking about it. I was really bummed. Sunday was my birthday and guess what. She threw a surprise birthday party for me and when it came time for the present... they made me close my eyes... and they brought the gift in and IT WAS THE PLANT STAND. I was floored! I will post pitures later when I get it all set up but I just has to share with you guys. Have a good day.

Do you wick water all of your plants? It looks like there is a wick at the top of your pot.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I do wick everything..........I put the wicks in the solo pots when I separate babies..........put 1/3 perlite in the bottom of the solo pot..........then my mix...........
I keep the babies in the solo cups with wicks in a tray with a piece of acrylic blanket material with a dome until they are rooted real well and ready for the grids on top of the permanest trays.......................they then already have a wick

The wick at the top you see is something I learned on the av forum about wicking from Snowrose.........I was having so much trouble with wicking small plants , especially minis...........so , now..........i take a razor blade and just take a small cut on the top of the pot I am using..................thereby being able to take the wick from one side of the pot at the top to the opposite side of the bottom......................it works!!!!! it covers so much more area evenly................
