I hope someone out there grows this and can tell me what I have to do to get this to bloom. I've had several plants -- they only bloomed at the time of purchase --- over a year ago. It's with all my other av's that bloom off and on through the year.
Anyone have a problem like this? It's really frustrating, I want to throw this plant out! But I'm so hoping it will send up some flowers;-(
Tipt - anyone grow this a/v?
Maureen, I need to know a couple of things. Have you re-potted 'Tipt' since you got it? If so, what size pot? The reason I am asking is sometimes if a pot is too big, the plant puts all it's energy into making roots. Also, do you feed your plant? With what? Please filI in a few more details as to how it is being grown. Light is an important factor for blooming. Not enough and you can have nice foliage and very little to no bloom.
I know Tipt is an oldie...I've never grown it.
I have moved a few time and have moved my plants from different spots and it seems to me that it takes a long time for it to bloom when I moved from Michigan to IL it took about 6 months for a bloom to start I don't know if this is help but I thought I throw in my 2 cents LOLO

HI Snowrose, thanks for helping me on this:-)
I started with Tipt quite a while ago. It came in either a 3 or 4" pot when I got it. It was in bloom and so beautiful. That was the last time I saw a bloom. I got frustrated with the original plant and took leaves and started new plants thinking I would have better luck getting a blooming plant. I gave lots of the small plants away hoping someone else would have better luck. No one got a bloom. I now have one plant left. It's in a 2" container. I fertilize occassionaly with optimara. It is in a west bay window that gets great light. My other av's on here are all in bloom and look very happy. The foiliage looks a bit pale compared to the other av's and the crown looks tight. I haven't repotted it in about 11 months.
That's all I can think of, let me know if you have any ideas.
Dimmer, thank you for your input. It sure seems to be a tough plant to get to bloom, but the flowers are so pretty that I keep trying.
I hate to say this but since you have had it so long and it's in good light and other people aren't getting bloom either, it just might be a shy bloomer to say it nicely. Another way to say it is, it just might be a dud. Your other violets are happy and blooming and this one has had plenty of time to bloom also so I'm thinking it's just not going to be a good performer. Up to you if you want to continue growing it and having it take up time and space from something else that might be better. Very frustrating I know. If you decide to keep it, it could use a fresh repotting after 11 months. Try feeding with a fertilizer with a high middle number like 12-36-14 for example to promote bloom at the rate of 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water.
I agree with Snow about the fertilizer ... sometimes a boost with a bloom booster makes all the difference! I remember years ago using Orchid food with a high middle number for AV's and it worked! hmmmm ... maybe I should give it a try again to a few of my AV's ... need to feed the orchids, might as well give a drop or two to the AV's too!
Let us know the outcome of your 'Tipt'! I got a leaf of 'Tipt' in trade once but it didn't survive.
Snowrose - thanks for helping me, I'm definitely going to try the bloom booster - I have some in the cabinet. I'll try that and repotting and see what happens. I have a couple of others that could use a bloom booster too (just not as much as Tipt). Plantladylin - thank you for the input.
have a good day
Maureen
