Need a fast growing scented vine.

North Augusta, ON

Hi all!!

I need a fast growing scented vine to climb here and there in the summer. Can be an annual. I tried sweet peas, but they are just setting buds and we're gonna get a frost any day now, had a light frost last week actually, wiped out all my Dahlias. I need something that will grow and bloom in 3 months, that's all the time they have here.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

There are some clematis whose blooms have a light fragrance. 'Sweet Autumn' Clematis is very vigorous, but can be invasive in some areas. (I've got one, and it gets huge, but so far it has stayed more or less in its corner.)

Is hops fragrant? I've heard it's a great vine if you need fast growth, like for a privacy shield.

Here's a list of vines with fragrant flowers that will grow in 5a. They're all perennials so they may not grow super fast, but they'll come back every year so within a year or two you should have good coverage. With annual vines unless you can find a way to start them indoors over the winter, I think you're going to always run into trouble with not having enough growing season (although sweet peas are especially problematic, they're a cool season plant and won't bloom during the heat of summer, so the trick with them is to start them early enough that they can bloom before hot weather comes).

I didn't search for sun vs shade so you'll have to look for growing conditions that match yours, and don't look at the ones that have a red x by them since those are most likely invasive. You probably don't want any of the wisterias either, they're big bulky vines and will need a really sturdy support. But hopefully there are some in there that might work for you.

Lee Anne,

Another thought is to grow some of the easier and free-flowering Passifloras. You have to bring them indoors for the winter, but most of them do fine on a window sill or in a sunny room. For example, I put a Passiflora 'Incense' in a 10" pot in my garden last mid-May and I had lots of fragrant flowers for most of the summer and its still going strong. My Passiflora 'Blue Boquet', another fragrant beauty, didn't start blooming until early August, but ever since it has at least six flowers open every day.

Good luck.

I have an awful time getting Passiflora's to germinate........tried about 15 of them in the spring, didn't get one. What's the secret, maybe I'll try them again.
