protecting drainage holes in galvanized metal pots

Kyle, TX

Hi. I wanted to drill some drainage holes in some galvanized containers but thought the holes might, over time, corrode the metal. Is there something I can do to keep the ungalvanized holes from damaging the container?

rubber grommets. maybe hot glue. super glue on the edges

You can paint the holes with the tar that they use for sealing grafts.
You might want to coat the whole inside to add life to the container.Even galvonized stuff corrodes eventually.
I read on the lable that you can use it for sealing tubs and pots so it should work for metal.I assume a tub is metal, sticks to the can real good -it seems to stick to everything wether you want it to or not.LOL
It has a brush in the lid.
I got a pint of Bonide pruning sealer and tree wound dressing,I think it was about $7.00 or $8.00.
They might sell it in smaller cans I don't know.

Thanks, Len123 and smokemaster, for all the good ideas. I wanted to lengthen the life of the metal containers and these sound like they'll do the trick.

Hi Crabmeat
Just a note about the metal containers. I have some and love them except the neighborhood cats seem to spray on them ! I don't have any cats and I have caught them doing it. I have had to be very dillegent in washing the spot or else they corode very quickly! I have had to repaint a couple of sides and now they don't have the lovely look I had purchased them for.
I have also found that Cana's are so strong that they mis shape the pots and I had a problem last year getting the canna out! I ended up cuting it out in chunks. I over winter my canna's in a cold room bare rooted.
I also set them just up off the ground or grass depending on where I set them and the bottom seems to stay in better shape.
Enjoy your pots!

Thanks, annabell52, I wouldn't have thought of your ideas until it was too late. I don't think we'll have a cat problem, but you never know. That's also a good point about being careful what you plant in them. I will probably put in annuals that I'll be switching out, but it's good to keep in mind.

If you check a Home Depot in their Heating & Air Conditioning area, there should be sealant for ducting -which is galvanized metal. You would brush it on or use an old rag.

That's also a great idea, Joanne. I like the fact that it's going to be easy to find. Thanks!
