Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Fantabulistic pictures! You do great work with your photography. It certainly helps to have beautiful subject matter, as well.

Do you carry a spray bottle in your camera pack? Someone suggested that to me once and I thought it was a wonderful idea! ;-)

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks friends glad you like the pics..
I certainly enjoy everybody pics here..

Lol Teresa,
We traded our spray bottles for skeeter repellent!
It is raining here every day now typical for the summers here so no bottle needed..
Looking at the news and the radar it looks like we are going to get the hammer
drop on us once again..
I have never seen this weather pattern before, really strange stuff heading my way..
Invest 90,91,92,and 93 heading towards florida or already passing thru..
From weeks of drought to this mess!

Thanks all glad you enjoy the pics..
Been concentrating on the Golden Pagoda with my nutrients because i need her pollen..
I shot her with 2 injections of House and Garden Shooting Powder follow with a half teaspoon of Mad Farmers Bloom Buster and now i got 4 inflos busting out..
Her anthers are very big, full of pollen compared to most of my plumies..
Here are two shots of some of the inflos:

You say you need her pollen? Are you making crosses? If so what flower are you going to use as the female? Nice picture by the way.
Davie

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Clare,Teresa, Lou,and Davie..
Yes i been making crosses these past few years..
Am i successful? I won't know until my seedlings bloom for a 3rd cycle..

The female aka receptor is a bunch of my plumies..
This months project includes pollen from the Pagoda,Candy Stripe, and Fruit Salad.
I use plumies i know that seed well to begin with..
Currently this month's receptors are:
Sanuye
Flamingo
Quandamooka
Cotton Candy
Miami Magenta

robert - how do you remove the receptor's pollen so that it doesn't self-pollinate?

Yuma, AZ

Awesome crossing list. When is the best time to extract the pollen? Time of day? When the flower first opens, or after it has been open for a few days? Would love to make crosses but have yet to find any varieties that will produce seed in my climate.
Thanks,
Davie

I extract the pollen right before the flower opens because after it opens it is almost impossible to secure the flowers after i remove her pollen..
I use straws to slip over the uncurl flower to secure her from thrips or other invasive pests that may carry pollen from another plumie..
I extract the pollen by cutting a smalll incision at the base of the flower with a xacto knife
http://www.action-electronics.com/grc/vlvtk1.jpg
and use micro tweezers
http://www.hobbylinc.com/gr/squ/squ10303.jpg
to pull out her pollen.

Is there a right time to pollinate?
NO!
Plumies can be pollinated anytime but many peeps do it in the morning..
I follow the bugs and do it around sunset or morning when the bugs come around...
I also watch the ants to see which flower they are attacking for the sugar..
You can cleary see the ants pick and choose which flower is spewing sugar..
Sugar content tells me the flower is ripe and ready..
Also when you cut a fully open flower she will not bleed sap and the flower falls off shortly after you cut her..
When you cut a uncurl flower that'a about to open she bleeds sap and i use that sap to mix up my pollen inside of her base..
You can do it either way but be advise that if you use a imature flower then the pollen content will be low..
