My friend has a hibiscus that needs to be moved. Should she move it now or wait until it starts coming back up again? Tammy
when to move a hibiscus?
Hi, Tammy. Since you say it needs to be moved and you're in IA... I'm almost certain it is a hardy bush. How big is it? I know they don't LIKE to be moved once established, but I also know it CAN be done. I told a friend of mine it couldn't be done, but he did it. I would wait until the ground has thawed enough early next spring but before you see new growth. Try to get as much of the root ball as possitble. That way, it would still be dormant from winter and may not even know it's been moved. I'd also water it in very well with some miracle grow (vitamins for plants) in the water, and water periodically if you're not getting any rain.... until it's established in it's new spot....offer some food once you see growth. Then, I'd baby it all summer. Please, though, wait for someone else's opinion, as I'm not an expert.
Yes, and definitely give it SuperThrive and time once it's been transplanted.
Thanks. I thought she'd have to wait until spring, but I wasn't sure.
She could try, now, that it's cooler, but it has a lot better chance of establishing itself in spring when it wants to grow. But try to do it before it wakes up, it'll be less stressful on it. Good luck!
