i need to know when/if i fertilize my streps when they start growing from the lreaves i cut? plmk and thxs i cant believe this but i did it let me take some pics
streps
Good growing there, moretz! You can leave those little plantlets as they are for awhile till they get bigger. No hurry. You can feed them with a very weak fertilizer solution at the rate of 1/8 teaspoon per gallon of water. Perhaps, MG 15-30-15 or Peter's 12-36-14. Or what would be easy is the Schultz drops (7 drops per quart) for african violets.
What medium do you have your strep leaves planted in?
Oh how cute Moretz! Great Growin! I have had absolutely no luck with Streps!
Good job Moretz! Look at all those cute little babies : )
ice berg blue
i cant remember what bing o i won but these are the leaves from it lol and i am tickled pink hehehe
thxs everyone for the info
Iceberg Blues is a beautiful strep and you have done so well propagating it. Continued success.
thxs i am proud lol now i can officially say i grew streps lol now i want more leaves heheheheheheeheheh thxs again
Once those strep babies grow up more, I'm sure you could make some trades for more strep leaves, plantlets, etc.
You did a great job on those and you should be proud of your accomplishment.
thxs snow i am
Hi Moretz,
I separated out my baby streps earlier than most would just because they were looking sad and going down hill. I'll post some pictures here so you can see what they looked like when I transplanted them and then what they looked like 10 days later and then again 17 days later. To say they really took off is an understatement!!
Ok, this was on August 30th when I first separated them. You'll notice some have more than one in a container as there was not getting all those babies apart!!

Now some of these will need to be separated again, the ones that were so tiny that I left them together that is. A few of these have been on their own from the beginning.
Snowrose I wanted to say how wonderful your strep leaves look all put down that way. I am going to try that method next as although I have had a lot of success with several different leaves that I have de-veined and put the halves down I think I will get stronger and bigger babies if I do it your way instead of the multitudes of little guys I get the other way. We shall see!!
~Brenda
wow yes i think you did the right thing by transplanting them when you did i will keep an eye out for mine and see thxs for the info
did you plant yours in AV soil? or regular soil and do you fertilize them when they are that small ? thxs again
Hi Moretz,
What kind of mix do you have the strep leaves in?
I have used Eleanor's VH 11 on them ever since starting out. I used it in the water that I dampened the mix with that I put them down in and if it needed re moistening I used the Eleanor's.
I transplanted them into a light AV soil and I've continued to water (they haven't needed much as they have been in a humidity dome) with the Eleanor's. I have just started this week taking the dome off for part of each day trying to toughen them up and get them used to regular room air.
Now I have several more strep leaves that I need to separate out and do this same thing with....maybe as soon as these can come out of the dome so I can use it with the new transplants......

seed germination mix
Eleanor's VH 11 --never heard of it can i get it at like wally world or do i have to order it?
You can order it from Charley's Greenhouse, either via web or by phone. This vendor is in California.
ok great thxs
Bemedel, I have tried different methods for prop'g streps. This seems good to me. I cut off anything that feels soft or flimsy whether on the top or sides of the leaf. What I root are firm chunks of manageable size. They hold up well. I have these in a corsage box. I will let you know how they do. This time I have them rooting in regular wick mix as I would like to continue the plantlets that way.
Great job, moretz! I lost the leaves I tried to start that way. I'm glad to see you having success with this method. Maybe I'll try again...
thxs so much
just make sure they keep humidity and they need some light as well where i did these at worked great seems like alot of things i do in the house at the sliding doors do good for me lol it has been too hot to do this out side and my house stays a steady 76* in summer so i think the "steady" temp might have something to do with it oo but not sure
I have an entire case of EleanorV11...........don't like it....................just my humble opinion...................
Everyone grows a different way with success............I was told by the president of our AV society that when you devein a leaf you never get as strong and healthy of plants that you get with wedges...........is it the truth? I don't know...............
I am growing with wedges now to get more growing points..........the stem and the major vein on either side of the leaf stem...........
Here are some chiritas and streps i grew from the leaves........some wedges and some the bottom half of the leaf...........I haven't separated them yet because even tho the baby is bigger than the mama leaf, she is still making more babies............two of the babies have leaves that are over 3 or 4" tall........
***************this is an old picture..........let me find the new one..........
