Welcome to DG, James! You've got a friend in me. I've seen fire and I've seen rain, but I've never seen that plant before. Maybe, a fig or mulberry of some kind, I don't know. I'm sure someone will know.

White Texas Star Hibiscus 'Alba'
I'm not the best at this but I have a Red Texas Star Hibiscus.....the leaves are the same. ...blooms all summer.

The white I found in plant files...still don't know how to do a link. There are lots of funny jokes about how much it resembles another plant that is very popular in some cultures.

ahem......sometimes referred to as pot.

When Josephine sees this thread she will know or Mitch, or podster, or lots of others.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Is this the one, Christi Lou?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Sure is. The white is pretty rare. I have the red and it blooms constantly....I have saved seeds this year. since I can't go to the RU.....really need to get some of the seed to you or Mitch since you guys are closest to my home. No guarantee that this what James has....just looks similair. (I just can't seem to spell anymore)

BTW...where are the instructions on DG about hyperlink, blue letters....all that good stuff?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Swamp Hibiscus, Scarlet Rose Mallow, Texas Star, Scarlet Hibiscus
Hibiscus coccineus

This the red in the plant files.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

Louc i also have they red and absolutly love it it blooms every day

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Lou, I don't know if there are instructions but if you'll go to the page you want to link TO and put your cursor on tha address bar at the very top of the screen then right click on the web address, it will have a drop down menu. Left click on COPY. Then go to the thread where you want to put the link. Type whatever message you would type normally, then push either SPACE or ENTER so the link will be separate from your text. Then right click and the drop down menu will appear. Left click on PASTE and and your link will appear but it won't be in blue until you send it or previw it.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks. I also see copies sometime in blocks....????

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry, Christi Lou, I don't understand the question.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

For instance: Podster just started a new thread in the Texas Forum, something about finicky tropicals. She quoted Vossner and it is in a block and the letters are blue.....I see it all the time.

Quoting:

Like this? Just highlight what you want to quote then copy it. Paste it where you want it and add
[-q-u-o-t-e-] before the text and add [-/-q-u-o-t-e-] after the text

Don't use the -'s
I only used them so it wouldn't look like a quote.

I will be danged ......... I do believe that that is what it is ............ COOL .......... it's a wonder that it hasn't died I have been treating it like a tree !!!! had several offshoots that i have trimmed away trying to get it to make a substantial trunk !!

Thanks Everyone........ If you like I will keep you posted on this plant ......... maybe it will produce some seeds in the future.

Please keep us posted, James. Don't know your zone. I am 8a. My plant is in the ground and dies out after the first freeze.....soon as it is warm in the spring it comes right back two fold. As with any hibiscus, each bloom lasts for a day.....leave it on the plant for several more days and then cut off the seed. Helps it rebloom and gives you more starts.
I have left them to fall in place before and had new plants. Some days I have 8-10 blooms.

My side shoots bloom and the original stem can get 8-9 feet tall. Doesn't form a tree.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

Lou, thanks and I will keep y'all posted ...... I believe that I am in 8a as well .......on the plant files page it says shade and sun .....and in some of te pics it seems to be doing well in full sun ..... I have a bed that I could put that in that would get full sun .....

any suggestions?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

These two blooms are overlapping. I had to move mine year before last because I put it too far to the front of the bed and it overpowered other smaller plants. I have it in front of my bedroom window in the back and we get to see the blooms early every morning. Even DH is taken by it. We have heavy clay, alkaline soil.....I amend with Miracle Grow Garden Soil and just a plain local compost.

Guys, I hate to disagree, and I may really be wrong, but the stems on Jataylor's plant just seem to woody to be Hibiscus coccineus, although the leaves look a lot like it, check the stem on this plant, it is green and tender, I think his plant maybe some type of tree, but again not sure.
I guess time will tell.

hhmmmmm ........it is really woody ..........do y'all need more pics ??

How much time are we talking about here?....... it is woody like a tree ...... I was thinking that earlier when I was looking at the pics in plantfiles.....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

You can trust Josephine's information every time. Told you I wasn't very good. Early in this thread I admonished you to wait for Jo.

LouC

But you did learn something about Texas Star Hibiscus....

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

Lou ......... yes you did say that !!!!! ......and yes I did learn about star hibiscus ....!!!!!!

So ; 0 )

How are we going to figure out what this plant is ?!?!

Josephine?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I dont know what it is but I have two of them growing in the bushes around my home. For now I have been letting them live in time to move to a new spot. They have been growing bigger like a tree, getting bigger each year. I was thinking that they are a type of mulberry but I am not sure. I cannot find them online anywhere but it must be something.. anyway three years and mine looks the same and nothing diffrent I can see but no blooms.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Lou - I will take anything over to the swap- or bring anything you trade for back from the swap too...

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

At this point....I don't need anything....just hate to let things go that would be happy somewhere else.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I will take them for you - no problem.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I love the Texas Star Hibiscus too, Here is a very unusual picture. Usually they have 5 petals right? Well this plant bloomed one day with three flowers, one had 5 petals, one had 6 and the third one 7. I have never seen them do that again, but I am glad I took the picture.

Takes my breathe.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Jo, what are you feeding those hibiscus? lol
:~)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Just plain old compost, another thing that is unusual is that they are on a slope in full sun, so they can't hold much water, but they do fine anyway considering they are basically aquatic plants.
Josephine,

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Maybe there's a spring or leaky pipe under them. Ha ha!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Nope, but that is the mystery of nature, it behaves as it suits it best.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

That's very true!

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey All ......... I looked at that plant again this morning ........ the stem is woody ....... not like the pics in the plant files of rose mallow ........I took a pic, but did not have time to post it this morning ....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Texas star is aquatic? Like I could plant a small one in a pot and grown in the pond?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, some people grow it that way, however I don't think it can be very deep, they do grow in swamps.
Josephine.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

hhhmmmmm
