I have a birdfeeder in the backyard which I love because I can watch the birds that come to eat every day. However, the last week or so I have had to fill it every day. I am gone during the day so I am not sure who is eating so much, there is some on the ground but most is just disappearing. If this continues I am going to have to invest in birdseed stock! Lol.... Would this be due to migrating birds perhaps?

getting eaten out of house and home!
Don't know blue eyes...but I know the feeling. What kind of birds do you have there or do you have squirrels maybe getting to the feeder ?
Probably flocks of something like Grackles if it isn't some type of wildlife.
What kind of seed do you have out?
You could try stopping what your using and go to all Safflower seeds; see if that improves the situation. If it does help then after a little while you could go back to your usual seed mix.
If its deer or raccoon then I'm not sure safflower would help. Maybe someone else could answer that question. :-)
Sorry better; I should have hit preview before posting. :-)
Hmmm....haven't ever seen squirrels around here, at least not when I've been outside. I have been getting a lot of cardinals, and some other little birds but I am not sure what they are. Some are small and all gray and others are small and black and white. The black and white ones are also eating at the thistle feeder occasionally. I was hoping to attract some finches but I guess they haven't found me yet. I need to get an ID book so I can name them better.
Might be Chickadees (the black & white ones).
it is a basic wild birdseed mix I picked up at Kroger. I live in town and not many deer are seen here so I doubt it is that. We do have a lot of grackles so that is a possibility. The funny thing is that I fill it in the evening, and in the morning it is still full and I see the birds that come and eat. There are a nice bunch but not enough to chow down the whole feeder. Then I go to work, and when I come home it is empty! Lol....I guess I need a sick day to spy on the birdfeeder...
Safflower is sort of a bitter seed but is still liked by Cardinals, Chickadees, House Finch and some others. Grackles and Starlings don't care for it.
Good to know! I'll try that next and see if it helps.
Hi Pell, it's been awhile since I visited the bird forum. How are you doing ?
Blue eyes: I have grackles here and believe me they can eat a lot. I can fill a giant bowl and it will be gone by afternoon. If I don't feed them then they start bothering my finches so I just keep feeding them.......I'm beginning to think they are eating better than me (lol)
I'm good better! Good to see you. We've missed you! :-)
Well when it gets to 110 I stay inside. (except to run out and fill the bird feeders ) . Not too many birds around here in the summertime anyways. It's finally starting to cool off here and then I'll get out and start getting pics again. I think the hawks should start showing up here soon.
Our Hawks are really making their presence known in the last week (the weathers been cool). Monday we saw a Red -tailed Hawk nab a squirrel and tear it apart to eat it. I have the pics but their pretty graphic.
I don't blame you for staying inside in that heat; we're supposed to go back to hotter temps soon.
My House Finch can empty a feeder real quick! I had to quite using safflower seed only in my tube feeder because of them. I have to fill the thistle feeder every 2-3 days since the gold finch like the new setup now with their feeder seperated. lol
Me, too, Nanny. I don't know where those rose finches store all that food they eat, but they do to a bird feeder what a tomato worm does to my tomato plants... POOF... GONE!
funny..judy !
