Weeds mixing into Asian Jasmine

Tampa, FL

Last year I planted a great deal of Asian Jasmine as ground cover and it
has expanded beautifully. However, I now have a couple of different
viney weeds growing all throughout the jasmine.

Is there an herbicide I can use that will not damage the jasmine?

Thanks!

There's not going to be anything that'll kill the weeds but not the jasmine, the trick is to take a paintbrush and only paint the weed killer onto the plant you don't want.

Aww the God/ Goddess that is Ecrane!! *whispers* Has all the answers

I wish I had all the answers! You should see the "plant graveyard" next to my deck with all the plants that didn't make it through this summer :-) And everything I know I either learned through an unfortunate mistake that I made, or from reading posts from everyone on DG!

Hi, thanks for your responses. If I apply RoundUp to some of the viney weed, will it kill the whole thing, or just the part
touched with the herbicide?

is the jasmine in the sun, because as far as i know roundup only works in the sun

In theory it should kill the whole plant. However, some weeds are more resistant to being killed than others, and Roundup doesn't work on everything, so it depends on what the weed is. If you can get a picture of it and post it here, hopefully someone will know what it is and recommend whether Roundup is your best bet or if you should try something else (regardless of what you use though, it'll still kill your jasmine too, so you'll have to be very careful with the application)

Roundup works in the shade too, I think you just see the visible results faster if it's in the sun

thanks for the info ecrane, now i can point out to DH alot of spaces he missed!LOL

Vinegar is the one thing that really works better on a hot day with the sun shining down--Roundup is absorbed into the plant and gets down to the root to kill it and it'll absorb it regardless of whether it's in the sun or the shade. The newer formulas are even rain-proof within 10 minutes or so. So if it's a weed that Roundup will kill, it's pretty foolproof.

The jasmine is mostly in direct sunlight. I'm going to try RoundUp and I'll post some before and after pics. Thanks!

Here are pictures of the two viney weeds invading my jasmine. The first weed looks like
a small cloverleaf.

The second weed is a lighter green than the jasmine.

I love my jasmine... If I were you I would cut the jasmin back.... In my opinion if you spray or paint round up on there it generally takes the round up back to the roots and if it got on your jasmine it may kill it. If I were you I would go for the vinegar that way it burns it were the sun hits it but will not KILL your jasmine. Just me. I love my jasmine.

again the uber glamorous and all knowing ecrane is COrrect (again.....did I say that all ready?;D)

Hi dangitgirl, how much cutting back do you recommend? And do I use the RoundUp then? Thanks!

Follow your vine from the root, try and keep each vine as long and intact as you can and snip it where it starts to tangle badly with the weeds. I mean this is jasmine we are talking about. You can cut it to "a stump" and it will come back ya know?

If you get round up on it and it gets to much it's going to very sick which could make it weak and suceptible to diease and either way it well....dies.

I hada passion vine that was being a bit invasive to my other vines so I moved it. I hacked it right down now my others have taken off.

Know your foe. I can’t really see either of the plants in either of your images well but the first foe might be Lespedeza I suppose but more likely Oxalis while the second image could be Moneywort but that sure is looking like Drymaria to me, specifically Drymaria cordata. Common name of that Drymaria is West Indian Chickweed.

JeffDrumond, you've got a tad bit of a problem there. I don’t think RoundUp is going to put a dent in either of those weeds regardless of whether you apply it at the right temps or not. Using the RU would sort of be the equivalent of trying to kill a mite with an insecticide. A mite is an arachnid and needs a miticide. Try Ortho's Chickweed, Clover & Oxalis Killer for the two nasties you photographed above. Active ingredient is different than RU's glyphosate and you should enjoy success with Triclopyr. Here's where it gets tricky. I think you're going to have to sit down with a stamp licker bottle filled with the happy juice at regular concentration and you're going to have to start going at the undesirables of your ickies growing in and amongst your desirables. I don't see any other simpler or less tedious means by which to eradicate them. You'll be dabbing for quite a while but persistency will pay. Now is a good time to begin treating them.

Be careful, that Asian Jasmine you like is a documented invasive species and that Ortho product might down it.
