I have two huge Brugs that are beautiful. The plants are healthy and nice and green but not a single bloom all summer long. sigh What does it take to get these bad boys to bloom? I will admit I haven't had time to feed them much. They get lots of sun and are planted in very good soil with mushroom compost. Is my soil too rich for them?
Would love your ideas. I have three more in pots but they are young and from cuttings. I may leave them in pots and see what they will do next season.
What's Wrong with my Brugs?
Dancey, I fertilize mine twice a week to get them to bloom, and that's with a hose end sprayer or a sprinkling can. The slow release fertilizers don't seem to do much for mine, I have to work to get them to bloom...lol
And....mine seem to bloom better when it cools off some, so it's not too late!
yeah, they really do like their fertilizer. I use any liquid. fert. good for tropicals. Slow release fert. doesn't seem to do much for my brugs either.
As for your young ones, many of mine bloomed the 2nd season, so don't give up on them. I intend to have all mine inground, but I do have a few potted, waiting for real estate to open up.
Thanks for the tips! I will start fertilizing mine now and maybe they will bloom before the first hard frost. The largest ones I have are in the ground. They come back every year in spring.
I would love to see some blooms. I think they are so pretty.
They are beautiful, I am very weak when I see one, often thinking it will thrive in our awful heat and humidity. Most of my named varieties have not done well, they barely grow. I have a pink and yellow, unnamed varieties, that do well here.....they don't wilt and no bugs.
Which ones do you have?
These Brugs demand too much attention! lol A friend sent me cuttings from Georgia and she told me the same thing about the Liquid fertilizer ... does this mean I can buy Miriacle gro, the one you mix with water or is there somrthing straight out the bottle you use?
Sylvia, you have to look at them like pampered pets lol The more you dote, the better they do.
I use Miracle Gro, the one you mix with water, for a can, and then there's the one that you put in a hose end sprayer...that's the easiest one.
It seems many tropicals (mine anyway) won't bloom unless they get fertilized often, I've noticed it with my Bird of Paradise, Hibiscus and Plumies.
Mine are growing straight up ...they look healthy ...I will take pictures tommorow
I have a pale yellow one. It has bloomed once late last year. I also have pink that has never bloomed . I have several others that were given to me as cuttings. One of our members here sent me a lot of cuttings early fall of last year.
So is it too late to spray with MG now?
what about Messenger?
I feed mine all year long..lol..scoop up piggy poop(so I don't have to step in it) and throw to the brug feet..lol
LOL Mood! I don't have piggy poop but have lots of cow poop. LOL
