How late can I plant Daffodils in Southern Ontario?

Waterville, KS

Hi everyone
I want to plant some daffodil bulbs in my front yard to surprise my American husband in the spring when he finally arrives in Oshawa for good as a Permanent Resident. Daffodils are his favourite flower of all and I want to welcome him home with as many as I can squeeze into that soil but need to be sure they havent bloomed and faded before he arrives. Any suggestions?

Being sure they haven't all bloomed and faded is mostly about choosing the right varieties. Since you haven't planted them in that location before (and since they tend do bloom at slightly different times depending on what the weather has been like), I would suggest getting ones that bloom at a variety of times. You see them listed as early season, mid season, late season. However, exactly what the season is depends on where you are. (When I plant "February Gold" it blooms in April.)

As far as how late you can plant them, my general rule is this: If the ground is frozen solid, it is too late.

Thank you for the information Amazar. I appreciate it . All the best !

When exactly will your husband arrive in Oshawa? I agree that planting many different kinds is a great strategy, but I could let you know how mine did last year which may help choosing as well.(I'm in York Region, on the northern end of the GTA).
