New Hummers arriving!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Our regulars seem to have left this morning, but a group of migrators have moved right in! There is one adult male but he is very elusive.

I figured this past week, as cool as it was, would be the end of the hummers in my yard, but they're still in full force. I watched one give a chickadee what for Sunday. The chickadee was trying to drink from the ant moat hanging above the hummingbird feeder and the hummer came outa nowhere and started cussing at the chickadee and chased him all the way across the back yard. Those crazy birds think they're part doberman or something.

I think I only have around seven. I was expecting a lot more from up north. I guess ya'll fed them good enough to make the whole trip without stopping to refuel.

Well, since my summer group just left, they should be heading your way and will for sure need to refuel!!!

Since I am expecting company I went out and splurged on the stuff that is full of vitamins and minerals that still needs sugar added. It said to add between 1 and 2 cups of sugar. I added 1 3/4 cups. I wanted them to be well fed after their journey to the Hospitality State. It must be packed with something. I think a female ran the males off to become the new guardian hummer on the west side of the house.

Okay Frank; I'll bite. What vitamin stuff are you talking about?

Nice pic!

It is a liquid that comes in 58 fl. oz.(1.7L) jugs. Made by Pennington. Mineral water with Vitamins A,C,D-3,E,A Propionate. No clorine or flouride. "Natural Springs Nectar". It does have red dye no. 40 in it along with citric acid and asorbic acid. Also mid-season orange oil and phosphoric acid. On the east side of the house I have this in one feeder and the water and sugar mixture in another. The hummers seem to prefer the comercial mixture. Maybe it is the D-Activaed Animal Sterol that is making the females run the males off.
edited to say-We can not keep this one in stock at wal-mart. People buy several at a time. It is the most popular.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

The date, September 15th, 2007. The place, northwestern Illinois.

The activity. Hummingbird Mating!

Oh my. This is something I was NOT expecting to see this late in the year, but a new young couple put on a mating show for about 20 minutes (with several… um… "connections"). It was AMAZING. I could not get a picture… got a little video but it is really dark and not so great.

Does this seem right?

Doesn't seem right this late. :-)

Marlton, NJ

LOL, maybe their practicing for next year?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Well all I can say is that SHE just wanted to feed and HE would not leave her alone! Hey, that kinda sounds like the DH and I! ;)

Crack me up! I had a vistor hummer this am. He was trying to drink from my tomato plants. I still have my feeders up of course. :)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

A big batch left here the first week of September and after that just stragglers. Then the cool front came in and since then the numbers are back up. The female that was guarding a feeder yesterday isn't here today. I really can't tell how long they stay since they won't wear nametags!

Mating hummers in September? Now that is weird. Ya'll are very funny....

Marlton, NJ

LOL, I keep changing my story but I'm sure the last of my regulars left 2 days ago.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll be ready for them if they come here!

Hummer action here was very slow today. I think my guardian hummer slept most of the day. I am worried that she may be getting to fat to fly far.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

My new group is still here and I can tell that they are starting to fatten up a little. I think we may have a new one that joined the group today, so we have about 6 or 7 right now.
