Glassine Envelopes

(Cathy), MO

I've had 3 people ask me where I get my glassine envelopes, so I thought I'd post it on here in case anyone else is looking for them.

The cheapest place I've found is an online stamp company. #2 envelopes are $2.75 and on up to #7 for $6.25. They come in packs of 100. And shipping is 2.75 no matter how much you order. But it's not a very user friendly site.

Easiest way is go to:

http://www.mysticstamp.com/

Click on the "Order Stamps and Supplies" tab at the top
On the left, either search for glassine envelopes, or use the "Go To Page" and change it to page 128
The envelopes are in a little area towards the bottom of the page, on the right.

Thanks Cathy

Thank you Cathy, for supplying that information. I just ordered some.

I really like them. I have the zip top little plastic also, but some of the small seeds tend to stick to those. Only problem with the glassine's is you have to tape the flap. But even so, I still like them better.

I too, have been unable to find them so I was delighted to see a source!! I will like the convenience of having all the same size and shape envelopes for my seeds to help keep them in order!!
Just a hint that I use: I print individual mailing labels on my computer with info for seeds and stick it to the envelopes (ht, sun exposure, color, etc) Better because sometimes even I can't read my writing!! (No, I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express one night last week.........;-))

Hey I like that idea. Even if we don't have drs handwriting, it would look so much neater! Thanks basket_case!

(Does Super 8 count?? I could be a nurse!)

Thanks for the source! I mostly use the little zip-baggies too (WalMart has the best prices on them, in the craft section), but once in a while there's a type of seed that really would be easier in little glassine envelopes.

I was using sticky labels on envelopes, but I've switched to just printing them on regular paper, cutting them into label slips, and putting a slip inside each zip-baggie. No more unstuck, lost labels! But sticky labels would be the way to go with glassine envelopes.... :-)

I got some of the ziplock envelopes too, but someone requested I send their seeds in glassine if possible, so I went shopping.
I like the label inside idea for them. There are so many good ideas in here!. I just sit back and soak them all up! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I should add that I still use one of the label templates... I just find a template the right size for my little zip-top bags, and then I print out on regular paper and cut them apart.

I know what you mean, cat... I learn things continually on DG!

I've only been in here about a month and still haven't had the time to go thru all the forums! So much information in here! On everything!!

I saw on QVC a paper punch that makes 1 inch x 1 inch envelopes. Here's a link: http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/app.detail/params.aol_refer.false.tpl.DETAIL.msn_refer.false.item.F182587.ref.GBA?cm_ven=GOOGLEBASE&cm_cat=SPORTS%20%26%20LEISURE&cm_pla=CRAFTS%20%26%20HOBBIES&cm_ite=F182587

How cool!

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

WALMART has the little zipper baggies? I've hunted high and low for those things and was just about to go online to purchase them (although now that I've found the glassine bags I may just forego them altogether).

Thanks everyone!

They are usually in the craft sections, by the beads. My store has them down really low so it's easy to miss them.

Dowagiac, MI

Mine too. They are either on a bottom shelf, or on a pegboard hook, and NOT where the other crafting bags are. It's worth hunting for them, they are 100 bags for .97.
The last time I went, I bought all 5 bags they had. It's easier to do that, than to hunt for them every time I need them.

Cathy, I got my glassine envelope order yesterday, and it occured to me that I probably never said "thank you" for the information. I was one of those people who asked you where you got them and you were kind enough to tell me. The website took some figuring out but I eventually bumbled through :-). They are perfect for seeds.

You are more than welcome Peggy. And yes the website is a pain. I ordered enough to do me for awhile and wrote the item numbers down so I can do a quick order next time! :-)

Sooo many good ideas...I agree!!! Never knew Wally World had the tiny zip locks...bought mine last time at Office Depot - for almost $5!! Ugh!!! Live and learn!

Backus, MN

I received my glassine envelopes. I have been putting seeds into them already. I ordered 300 so I should be good to go for awhile. Thanks for sharing that source!!

(Cathy), MO

You are so welcome. I don't know much yet, but will willingly share what little I DO know! :-)

I have been gardening all my life and find that this site gives me more answers to questions and ideas for things that I had never thought of!! If only I had more time to read it all and a better 'memory chip' so I could retain it all!! Time of the year to snuggle in and learn and dream for next year's gardens!!

(Cathy), MO

I know what you mean. I'm going to try winter sowing this year and didn't even know it existed before! And now I'm getting interested in lasagna beds! Plus so many different kinds of plants I'll be lucky if I don't have to build on a room just to hold them during winter! What an addiction! LOL

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm going to have to get some of those now too. Will definitely be helpful with the tiny static prone seeds.

I've been to Diane seeds before and never saw them! Will have to check them out! Thanks dmac

I edited because I'm not sure the price is the best for the size envelopes but if you were ordering seeds anyway, it might be worth it. I
The site I had mentioned was http://www.dianeseeds.com
They only had one size and they were 100 for $5 or 20 for $1--S&H was $2.75 for up to $34 worth of seeds which I'm sure would cover the lightweight envelopes. I found them listed beneath the alphabetical list of either annual seed or perennial seeds under the heading Other items.
