How do I propagate hardy "Marsh Mallow" hibiscus and can they be propagated now? (western
Virginia in mountains)
Hardy Hibiscus Propagation
I'm not familiar with the hardies, but I would assume that it would be the same as with the tropicals? Call me dumb, but I don't think you waste any time if you do these things:
1. Take your cuttings, strip off the lowest leaves
2. Dip the tips (cut at a slant) into some Root Tone and then put into a cup of water (sounds gofy, but it works for me!)
3. Leave for about 3-4 days, then start changing the water out regularly with fresh water every 2 days (no more need to add Root Tone).
4. After a few weeks, you should be ready to pot the cuttings in some potting soil. Put a few cuttings per pot and keep them inside, giving them enough light and water as you feel necessary.
5. Take outside in Springtime / when the weather warms a bit! They should be completely rooted and ready by then. :)
I had Hibiscus in UK, not a bit like the ones I have in Fl. and they used to seed themselves everywhere, if they are the same variety with only 3 colour variations they should seed themselves around the base of the tree.
Aha! See - I knew someone else would know!!
I have been successful rooting A (1) tropical cutting, but never thought about starting a hardy one from a cutting... I'm like seemama, seeds germinate readily... I started some inside in March, they were nice planting size by mid-May. I'll second Amanda's advice. My mom told me to wait until early spring to clip the sticks off from the year before's growth. I think some people do it in fall when they are cleaning up... but mom told me to do it in spring before the new growth starts. (I've done it with a little new growth showing and it was okay) I guess it must feed the roots or something. I've learned to listen to my mom. Anybody else heard that about the hardies?
Oops! Maybe we aren't talking about the same hardy... I'm confused... Mallow Hibiscus... is that called rose of sharon, too?
