I got this in a trade this year. I had a tag in it, but one of my furry monsters chewed it off.
Could you tell me what I have? I'd like to make it a hanging plant, but I'm not sure if it's right for it or not.
Thanks in advance,
Marsha.
What is this plant?
wandering jew?
Yep, Tradescantia pallida. It will make a great hanging plant! Maybe break the stalk and root the segments to get a bushy plant.
No, Jax4ever, not pallida. This is tradescantia fragrens. In spring it blooms very scented flowers. I have been looking for cuttings. Treat this the same way as most other tradescantia.
Hang 'em High so the furry monsters can only look from afar.
:-)

If it's not Tradescantia perhaps it could be Basket Plant/Callisia fragrans:

I vote for Callisia Fragrans too.
Marsha: I have a Callisia fragrans I got in a trade awhile back .... Let me see if I can get a decent photo so you can compare the stems and foliage. I will be right back.
Here's the link to Plant Files for Tradescantia (Wandering Jew): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=tradescantia&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
There are 82 of them listed so maybe you will find a match if it doesn't end up being the Callisia. I don't think yours is Tradescantia pallida because that is the purple wandering jew. But, it could be one of the other's listed.
The more I look at the stems of your plant, I am leaning towards an ID of Tradescantia. Look at the stems on this one. I would love to have this plant .... beautiful flowers!

The terms callisia and tradescantia are used interchangeably with this plant. At least I have seen it in different locations used both ways.

Yep, they are both in the same family: Commelinacee but different Genus. One genus being Callisia and the other Tradescantia. So they are related.
Machikoneko, look at what you started! That's what makes Dave's such a great site!!! Ask and ye shall get tons of info.!!!!!
