Under the new postal regulations concerning thick envelopes (1/4 inch to 3/4 inch thick), it appears that the correct postage for a bubble pack envelope weighing an ounce or less is 80 cents. Is this correct? This is what I've been telling people who are sending a SASE.
Correct Postage?
Kelli,
I don't know the weight of the envelope but I do know that I got a couple bubble envelopes with $.80 on them.
Aline
They charged me $1.18 for a one ounce small bubble pack.
With me it depends on what post office I go to. Some are 80 cents and others are $1.18.

You can send for 58¢ up to 1 oz of seeds in a number 6 ¾ envelope with bubblewrap. This is the cheapest way to send seeds.

So you are saying a regular small envelope with a little bubble wrap around the seeds can be sent for less than 60 cents?
i just had a regular envy returned. they want 53 cents
Well just this week I have gotten a envelope with postage due on it. Says correct postage 80 cent .
And a bubble envelope that says postage due and it adds up to $1.20.
Came from different states .

They are now doing it by size, weight and distance.... They are a LOT higher now. What used to cost 78c is now $1.18.
This is totally redicules. It is so you can't trade much anymore. I have rec. them from 58 - 1.18 in the same size envelope weighing 1 oz.
I send all my seeds with a number 6 3/4 envelope with bubble wrap for 58 cents .. they even have a 58 cent stamp now.

I thought it was 58c before it went up?
It was 52 before it went up.

Oh Ok, I didn't remember I just new it wasn't that much. I alo am not wanting todo many trades. especially plants!
Wait till you hear this..... had DH take an envelope to PO (a bubble envelope, with one seed packet 10 seeds) going to Japan... I asked DH to please send it AirMail, so it could get there quick.
It cost 90 cents. Can you believe that... It cost less than to mail anywhere here in the U.S. I have the receipt in front of me, it was .50 oz Japan First Class Int'l. Okay, I shouldn't laugh, but there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with the Postal Service. I just send out some SASES and used all the stamps they sent because this PO puts them back in my box if there is not enough postage and writes on the darn stamps so I have to use new ones.. they're making me mad AND confused (not a good combination).. it's a good thing I have a humorous mind...

This is how I interpret the USPS web site. From what you all have told me, it sounds like I am understanding the information correctly.
If the "package" is less than 1/4 inch thick and weighs and ounce or less, postage is 41 cents. This is for a machine-cancelled postmark. These are called "Retail Letters and Cards".
I gather from what was said above, if the package meets those dimensions but you want it hand-cancelled, postage is 58 cents. (If the package weighs 1 to 2 oz, postage is 58 cents. Wedding invitations often fall into that weight range so 2-oz first class stamps are readily available, particularly in the "Love" format.)
If the "package" is 1/4 to 3/4 inches thick and is flexible enough to bend an inch and weighs an ounce or less, postage is 80 cents. These are called "Retail Flats".
If the package is 1/4 or thicker, is rigid, and weighs not over an ounce, the postage is $1.13. These are called "Retail Parcels".
The reason for all of these designations has to do with how things fit or don't fit in automated cancelling and sorting machines.
I got one today with 41 cent stamp.. with five packs of seeds and bubble wrap... it was a 8x5 manila envy... can you believe that? it was nice and fat. So that theory may not always be correct. IT was hand cancelled too.
Maybe it was mailed from Japan!
Argh
Maybe this is a clue. http://www.gocomics.com/ziggy/

Hi folks,
I send envelopes out all the time, but mine are puffy. Thus, they
will not fit into the little slot in the post office's chart. These puffy
envelopes are treated as packages because they cannot send
them through the machines. Seeds that can survive the smoosh
of the rollers are fine, and some get by with just bubble wrap
or bubble envelopes.
Postage charges are ridiculous.
Example? I just sent two packs of Rose of Sharon seed to
Illinois from Oklahoma, it weighed less than one ounce.
The charge? $1.13 via First Class mail.
A few recent trades arrived at my door with postage due because
of this new puffy lumpy rule. Sigh.
I'm glad the "puffy lumpy rule" is only for postage and not people.
My silly thought and best laugh of the day!
gardengus that is funny. Yes, I have tried to figure out how they come up with the postage on any given day it is subject to the whim of the postal worker.
