Looking for the right printer

I've got a Brother 3240C color, all-in-one printer. I never print color copies, but whenever any of the color cartridges go stale or dry up, the printer won't let me print black & white until I replace the old color cartridges. Seems like a gimmick to force me to buy cartridges I don't really need or want.
I'd like to get a a simple (inexpensive) printer that will let me print B/W copies even if the color cartridges are dried up. Is there such an animal out there? Thanks for any input you can offer.
