more photos - Green Spring

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I stopped by Green Spring in Alexandria yesterday. The trees looked really really parched, although the beds were clearly getting water.

Yet again, I took photos. Again, none of the white flowers came out at all, regardless of what settings I try :-( Oh, there's one exception taken in total shade....

For the first time, I noticed and stopped to look at the small patio design spaces. I liked a couple of them, and they certainly gave me ideas for the day that I have a little patio space.

What I really enjoy at Green Spring is the combo of plants they put into the beds. The EE and squash combos etc....., but of course I just looked and forgot to take photos....

Again, I'd appreciate names for the flying things.

Oh, here's the link to the flickr set. http://flickr.com/photos/ki/sets/72157602035157427/

Key, 2nd pic looks like a digger wasp, there are many different ones.

The last is a Skipper, possibly a Fiery skipper.

Nice pictures!

wow. thanks. I have never heard of skippers - I've only wondered why these moths are flying in mid-day sun :D

I don't enjoy photography itself as much as what I learn afterwards when I go through the photos.

Great close-ups. Sorry, can't help with the i.d's.

Hi Keyring - pretty sure the wasp is a Black and Yellow Mud Dauber / Sceliphron caementarium

Gonna go look at your pics now

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

my goodness. Apparently I had no idea what a wasp looks like. Sometimes I shock myself at my ignorance.

thanks!

Keyring, aren't their gardens fabulous? By any chance did you get any photos of the container plantings on the side of the admin. building? We received their newsletter recently with rave reviews - would love to see some pics. I have a few pictures from their border by the parking lot taken a few years ago I'll have to try to find and post - lush and beautiful!

The red flowering mounding plant you were trying to identify - I think it's one of the Bat-faced Cupheas, possibly one of these: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2033/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/137880/. There was also a new one this year with a more rounded "face" http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133085/. Neat plants and they bloom all summer right up until frost!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

well that's a relief. I am going to try glory pea again. Maybe I should switch to Cuphea which seems to be much easier!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Awesome shots Key! I know, I know... I really MUST get my photos from USBG uploaded!

Thanks for sharing!
