disk drive problem

My DVD ROM drive failed. Removed and ordered one on E-bay
Installed and now neither the DVD Rom or the DVD recorder drive will show on my computer.
They operate but software will not see them.
Went to add hardware and it could not find anything.
Double checked the ribbon cable plug connection.
