What time is it getting dark where you are...

(Zone 4a)

Right now it is 7.30 and it is starting to get dark. Too dark to work outside but not bedtime dark yet.

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

7:45, not 7:30 like I thought it was, and it is already DARK here.

Sun sets around 7. It gets dark enough to come in about a quarter of because of the tall trees to the west side of the house. We lose about a minute or two every day now. Turning the clocks is delayed until Nov 4 ( first Sunday in Nov. now instead of last Sun. in Oct.) this year so a slight reprieve for 4:30 and your done bit happens. Its darker later in the am now too. :(

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Fully dark by 7:30. Sunset today was 7:09.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

It's dark at 7:30, seems like just a few weeks ago it was too hot to work outside until 6, now you gotta get out there or you're out of luck.

(Zone 4a)

Crazy eh? I think that is the part of fall I dislike the most - the shorter days. I wake and it is dark and starts getting dark by the time I arrive home :( No wonder so many suffer depression.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Get full spectrum lights for your house. Makes a difference. Plants prefer it too.

(Zone 3b)

Interesting subject, DawnLL.
Not in the Northeast, but hope you don't mind me dropping in with a report.
Sunset tonight is 8:29; loss of 5minutes 40 seconds today..Length of Visible Light: 14hrs-38minutes. It certainly goes quickly from here on out, doesn't it?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi kiska. You're always welcome here! Can't believe you lose 5 1/2 minutes in one day! That's amazing.

Victor

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

35 minutes a week would be quite the bummer Kiska - howdy!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Guess it's the price you pay for having the sun almost 24 hrs in the Summer.

Whitehall, PA(Zone 6a)

It's completely dark by 8pm here now. One less hour of sunlight to look at my beautiful plants. :-( What a bummer.

On the up side....
1) At least I'm not eating dinner at 9pm anymore.
2) It's 76 non-humid degrees during the day, and I have to close the windows at night because it's chilly .....YAY!

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

It goes way to quickly. I can't believe how short the gardening season is. One day it is April and your starting to prepare the beds and the next day you are thinking about what you need to do to winterover your gardens!! Wow it was fast!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Isn't that the truth, Debby! Gardening is like life in that respect. I can't believe my little guy is in Kindergarten now. Next week he'll be in College!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Pretty soon he'll be changing your diapers!

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

I can relate to that one Victor!! I remember the day my oldest daughter was born looking at her and feeling a little overwhelmed, scared and worring about the long journey before us. Now she is 29!! I just can't believe it! 29! Heck my kids are 29, 26 and 18!! They were babies yesterday. I swear to God it was yesterday. Time goes WAY too fast.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha ha - true. I plan to be messy.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I know Debby - my wife and I are always doing that. Freaks me out when I hear a song I liked when it first came out and realize that it's 30 yrs old!

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

In addition to the days getting short it was freezing here today!! I think it may have just reached 70. Compared to the weather we have been having that felt real cold. Winter is coming faster than I remember it coming as a child.

Victor just remember that your son may be picking your nursing home some day!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes I know! I'm not complaining about the weather yesterday and today - exquisite! Should be like that every day.

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

Overcast and dreary here today.

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

at least what i remember of it was dreary. I wasn't outside too much today. Spent it in the office all day. Only going outside to get in the building and leaving the building. Got home and fired up both of the pc's one I am playing at DG on and the other I am finishing up some work stuff on. BORING!!

Hi Victorgardener/BigCityAl -
Hello, to all you neasterngardeners...I would love to see that part of the US some nice fall day.
This is a wonderful "small" world. It does add up with 5-even to 6 minutes loss per day.
Very funny here, too...
time does fly and by the time you "young" ones reach my age, barely in my 60's:), you do wonder...
9 gchildren later, you realize how lucky you've been/or blessed...
It didn't reach the 60's today and is less and less likely at this point. But I do love it here and the cool is great..
10:30 pm on July 14th.

Just remember when your kids grow up they will probably bless you with their own kids! We all hate to let go of the past and watch our kids grow up but something new and exciting usually happens with the change. I say usually because I know some have suffered terrible tragedies concerning family members. I have enjoyed for the most part the new grownup relationship with my children and watch them turn into wonderful adults. As an example our trip DD#1 and I are going on to Martha's Vineyard. I can't imagine going with a hyper active brat of 10, but going with a confident young woman that shares some of the same interests that I do will be lots of fun. We are just careful not to push each other's buttons. Eleanor

p.s. Just had to include this little story about pushing buttons. Last year on our trip the day before we left I suggested (before it started raining) that we go get the kayak that was chained up at the lagoon) but DD#1 snapped back I'm busy right now. I dropped the subject and didn't lecture. Later it started pouring and when it didn't let up she finally said she was going to go get the kayak and load it up - she knew not to ask me to help.

Well, all I know is every year the seasons pass more quickly. I have gotten way smarter the older my kids get and seems that as soon as they have the second grandchild I turn into Einstein. LOL.

kiska wow that is a gorgeous view no wonder you love it there. Does the dark in the winter get to you? I agree with others that aside from the pain in the neck of getting around in the ice and snow the worst part of winter is the lack of daylight.

Getting dark no clue -Sleeping... 4:30 AM it is dark. Light started to break at 5:45 AM

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Around 7:30 here, too. Lights on for dinner at 7 PM now. That's the signal it's fall, for me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

kiska, every shot you post is a postcard!

(Zone 3b)

grammyphoeb~~you put it very elequently; as adults, my "children" are even more fun to do things with.
ngam~~I like your analogy - with 9 gkids I'm now as smart as I'll ever be...
The darkness doesn't bother me ~~ I love the cosy feeling and on a clear night to see the stars/northern lights, is pure joy.
I find the long daylight gets to me in that there's no "stopping" point at days end. There are just over 40 days of endless light, and come fall, it's a welcome relief to have darkness.
pirl~~lights on is a sure signal of the change.
Thanks, victorgardener.
schickenlady- good morning.
6:30pm ~~ earlier this week.Fall color begins.

It gets dark at night here! My solar lights don't stay on as late into the night as they used to. I'll have to pay attention and see what time it is but I'm usually on the computer. Eleanor

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Sunset now in Albuquerque, NM is 7:20 p.m. and sunrise is about 6:45 a.m. I don't know when we readjust the clocks this year but seem to recall that it's in early November?

June

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes June - first week of Nov this year. They give us a big extra week!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I hate it when I am up more hours than the sun!!

Set at 6:58 last night, I think ...
Rose this AM at about 7:02. Of course, I am down in a valley.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

..of the Jolly Green Giant?

7:05 PM EST - peas please . Nite all see yeaha tomorrow.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

The only giant in this valley is my DSIL. Think big, bad, biker, and you've imagined him precisely!! But, he's not at all bad. He's a real teddy bear.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A real big biker teddy bear!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yeah. Kinda like Paddington with a Harley.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think the VT Teddy Bear Co. has a biker bear.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It does, Victor. It's just too cute for me to give it to DSIL for his up-coming birthday. He's more of a weed-whacker type of guy.
