want zennia seed

Texas/Okla central b, United States(Zone 7b)

I have seed for texas star hibiscus, red salvia, and many others. I want the seed for giant doubles any color or mixed, I really like the dark magenta colored ones.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I like the dark magenta, too, but I don['t have any of them.

I do have large double Zinias for cutting in a pretty dark lavender-purple, baby pink, hot pink and lots of different reds, scarlets, and an orange. Some aren't realy yet.

I posed this same question to Van Dyke Zinnias and here was her reply:

Try our fuchsia or the pack of reds -- I am not sure of the color since there are so many shades of red/purple!

She is having a 1/2 price sale (2 for 1) that ends today, but I bet if you email her she'll extend the offer a couple days..

let me know if u want to trade some when they are ready

.....I appreciate the link, there was nothing onsite about a sale. I did email them...it's hard for me to want to pay 2.50 for 100 seed which is the equilavent of one flower...but those fuschia ones are pretty spectacular.. ...

the ones they are calling cactus, the pom pom like ones.....do you have those in the reds?....or any? I think they are all great and they hold up so well here in oursummer heat.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It will be close on the cactus Zinnias -- not sure if the seed will ripen before the frost comes. :(

Yes, we'll do a trade for sure and I'll dmail you now so I have a little reminder to myself. I need red annuals, especially the ones you mentioned above - the Texas Star and Red Salvia, but any annuals are okay with me.

have lots of salvia seed, reds and a bi-colored coral, it'll be summer here for at least another 6 weeks maybe longer..

Royal Lakes, IL(Zone 5a)

I have some zennia seeds I took from my plants this season. I cut the flower heads off all that bloomed and put them in a brown paper bag. It is a little tough to get just the seeds. I would try giving a whirl, if someone would like to trade. They are just some mixed colors, they got about 2 feet tall. Give me a e-mail if your interested.

Vickie,

The Zinnia seeds are really, really easy to find because there is one at the end of each petal. Pull the petals from the flower and then pull the seed off the petal and put in a baggie. Choose only the dark gray ones that have soe weight to them and are sort of heavy for their size. Those are the only live ones.

You'll be left with a bald flower, and you hold that over a sheet of paper and manipulate it by squzzing and twisting (pretend it's an orange you want to get the rest of the juice out of) and the seeds and chaff fall out. There won't be too many seeds, so just pick them out and throw everything else away.

I have the 'white Burpee zinna' that really didn't turn out pure white but they are huge flowers. I'll try to post a pic for you. I know it's in the opposite color range but the original seeds were about $4 for 25 seeds. I have bunches.

yes, really gripes me to pay $4 for 1/2 a flower

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Do you mind what colors they are? I have some candy striped one and then some tall pink one... Then what I call pom pom ones in yellow....

Suzy, thanks for the good description of how to get the seeds separated. I admit, I usually don't bother but just pull seeds and petals and all off the flower heads... There are plenty of seeds in the resulting mix, and sowing the chaff with the seeds makes it easy to see where you've sowed.

Jackie, I'll make a note that you could use some zinnia seeds. I sowed trade seeds plus some big packets that I bought from Fedco... I've got a mix of tall (some 5 feet tall!), large-flowered varieties growing along the back of my veggie bed, and there's another patch of Z. pumilla (shorter, smaller ones... the "cut & come again" variety).

sounds great thanks...I have a lot of ground to cover....I like them in my iris beds after the iris and then the daylily blooms are finished I mix the zinnia in with the tall salvias and agastaches

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I like the idea of putting them in the iris beds... zinnias do well without much water, and hopefully they won't be too dense for good air circulation around the irises.

Jackie,
I'll send you lots of white zinna. Do you have cosmos? Any color but white, pinks, purples. I have bunches of those.

I think the tall ( any color) cosmos with the airy foliage makes a great contrast in the butterfly garden
