I've recently heard that you can graft branches from fruiting varieties onto rootstock from a "fruitless" plum (aka. flowering, or purple leaf plum). Has anyone tried this or have info, tips, advice, etc. for doing it?

Sure, its like any other graft. I would suggest Gooogling on grafting tutorial and after reading up on it come back with some specific questions. Plums can be bud grafted this time of year with growing budwood or can be grafted in the spring with dormant wood. They are pretty forgiving of mistakes so you if you do enough tries you will get some to work.

I would think that grafting on an ornamental rootstock is a bad idea.
They aren't the strongest choices you have (even if compatible) and they will look different if you are successful.
Let us know how it turns out if you try it.
